Dhanteras is not an elected time at all. It is the thirteenth tithi of the dark fortnight, fixed by the moon's position relative to the sun. Nobody selects it and nobody can move it. The only thing anyone chooses is the window inside the day.

muhurta does look at planets. it checks the lagna and its lord, the moon's strength, and whether the significator of the act is well placed. so it is not true that electional astrology ignores planetary conditions.

what it does not contain is a rule that a retrograde mercury suspends commerce for three weeks. that specific instruction is a twentieth century popular-astrology idea from a different tradition entirely, and it arrived in india recently enough that ur grandparents would not recognise it.

and there is a second, larger point. in classical vedic terms a retrograde graha is vakri, and vakri grahas gain strength. retrograde motion earns cheshta bala, the motional component of shadbala. the tradition being quoted at u scores this as strength, not damage.

so the popular claim is not a strong reading of the vedic position. it is a foreign reading, translated in, and then attributed backwards to texts that say something close to the opposite.

the same churning story is what rahu and ketu come from, which is a nice piece of symmetry for a week that is about to be full of both.

In the classical reading, a vakri graha is about repetition and revisiting. Applied to a purchase, that translates into review rather than avoidance: read it twice, check the terms, keep the paperwork.

this is the version of the advice that survives contact with the evidence, and it happens to be useful.
