rahu and ketu, the two grahas that are not there

seven grahas are things u can see. two of them are not things at all. they are the two points where the moon's path crosses the sun's, and vedic astrology gives them more weight than almost anything else in ur chart.

ur chart has nine grahas. seven of them are objects u could point at on a clear night.

the other two are not objects. they have no body, no light, no mass, nothing to photograph. they are two spots in empty space, defined entirely by where two paths cross.

and vedic astrology treats them as the two most consequential things in ur chart. rahu gets the longest dasha of any graha. ketu gets blamed for every quiet exit u ever made. here is what they actually are.

the short version

rahu and ketu are the two points where the moon's path crosses the sun's. astronomers call them the lunar nodes. that is the whole physical story.

what rahu and ketu physically are

Rahu and ketu are the two points where the moon's orbit crosses the sun's apparent path around the sky. The moon's path is tilted about 5 degrees, so it spends half of each month above the sun's path and half below. The two crossing points are rahu and ketu.

picture it with two hula hoops. hold one flat. that is the ecliptic, the line the sun appears to travel along across a year.

now take a second hoop and tilt it about five degrees, then push it through the first one. the moon travels on this second hoop.

they meet in exactly two places. those two meeting points are rahu, where the moon comes up through the flat hoop, and ketu, where it drops back down. nothing is there. u could fly a spacecraft through both of them and see nothing but sky.

the tilt is small, about 5 degrees 9 arcminutes, and it is the single most consequential five degrees in the solar system as far as anyone standing on earth is concerned. without it, we would get an eclipse every single month. with it, we get a handful a year and only near these two points.

why they are always exactly opposite

Two circles tilted against each other intersect in exactly two points, and because both circles pass through the centre, those two points sit on opposite sides. So rahu and ketu are always 180 degrees apart. It is a fact of geometry, not an astrological rule.

this matters more than it sounds. every other graha in ur chart wanders independently. mars can be anywhere relative to venus.

rahu and ketu cannot. they are one axis wearing two names. move one and the other moves with it, always facing the exact opposite direction.

that fixed line is why so many chart patterns are built on them. kaal sarp dosha only exists because rahu and ketu hand u a perfect diameter through the chart for free. no other pair of grahas could do that.

it is also why they read as a genuine axis of meaning and not just two separate influences. whatever rahu is chasing, ketu is walking away from, in the exactly opposite house. one is always hungry for the thing the other is done with.

the eclipse connection, and the story built on it

An eclipse needs the sun, earth and moon in a straight line, which can only happen when a new or full moon lands near one of the nodes. That is why the tradition names rahu the head that swallows the sun. The myth is a precise piece of astronomy wearing a story.

the story goes like this. during the churning of the ocean, the devas and asuras produce amrit, the drink of immortality. an asura called svarbhanu slips into the line and takes a sip.

the sun and the moon spot him and tell on him. vishnu cuts his head off, but the amrit has already reached his throat. so the head lives on as rahu, and the body lives on as ketu, and neither can die.

and having been reported by the sun and the moon, rahu chases them forever. when he catches one, he swallows it, and it slides out through his severed neck. that is an eclipse.

now read that as astronomy. the eclipse point is described as a headless body and a bodiless head, permanently opposite, permanently chasing the two lights, and only able to catch them at specific points. every single detail of the story is a correct statement about the lunar nodes. someone was watching the sky very carefully and writing down what they saw in the format people would remember.

why they move backwards

The moon's orbital plane slowly rotates, dragged by the sun's pull, and it rotates in the direction opposite to the planets' motion. So the crossing points slide backwards through the zodiac at about 19 degrees a year, completing a lap in roughly 18.6 years.

everything else in ur chart moves forward through the signs most of the time. mercury and mars and the rest have retrograde spells, but they are spells.

rahu and ketu go backwards permanently. mesha to meena to kumbha, in reverse, always. that is not a phase.

the numbers, if u want them: about 3 arcminutes a day, roughly 19.35 degrees a year, one full circuit in about 6,798 days. divide the zodiac by that and each node spends around 18 months in a sign.

which means the rahu ketu transit is one of the slowest, biggest weather systems in a chart. it shifts twice in three years, and when it shifts, it moves two houses of ur life at once, because it always moves both ends of the axis together.

rahu: appetite with no off switch

Rahu is read as amplification without judgement. It is the head with no stomach, so it consumes and is never full. In a chart it marks where u are hungry, where u chase, where u are willing to skip the queue, and where u are most likely to overreach.

the classical significations line up neatly with the image: foreign things, unfamiliar things, anything unconventional, anything that spreads fast, illusions, smoke, cameras and screens, sudden elevation, and the specific flavour of ambition that does not check whether it deserves the thing yet.

rahu is genuinely good at getting u places. it is terrible at telling u when to stop, because it has no mechanism for satisfaction. it is a head with no stomach. that is the whole personality in one anatomical joke.

where rahu sits is where u are most likely to be spectacular and least likely to be sensible. rahu in the 10th makes people who want the title very badly. rahu in the 7th makes people who want the relationship very badly. same engine, different department.

and rahu inflates. whatever house it lands in gets loud, gets exaggerated, gets treated as more urgent than it is. that is why the same placement can read as brilliance or as compulsion depending entirely on what else is holding the chart together.

ketu: the thing u already finished

Ketu is read as detachment and involuntary expertise. It is the body with no head, so it acts without appetite. In a chart it marks where u are already unusually skilled, where u get no satisfaction from that skill, and where u quietly walk away.

ketu significations: spirituality, moksha, isolation, sharp analysis, surgery and precision, things ending, things u lost, and the strange sensation of being good at something u have zero interest in doing.

that last one is the most useful reading in the whole ketu file. people describe ketu placements almost identically: "i can do it, i have always been able to do it, i just do not care." that is the classical idea of a skill carried over and already exhausted.

ketu also subtracts. where rahu inflates a house, ketu tends to thin it out. not by damaging it, but by removing ur interest in it. a strong ketu house often looks fine on paper and empty from the inside.

and because ketu always sits opposite rahu, u get a permanent tension: obsessed with one department of life, bored of the exact opposite one. rahu in the 10th with ketu in the 4th is the person who cannot stop working and cannot stay home. that pairing is the actual reading, not either placement alone.

how to actually read them in ur chart

Because rahu and ketu own no signs, they have nothing of their own to express. Parashara's rule is that they behave like the lord of the sign they occupy, and like any graha they sit with. So read the dispositor and the companion first, then the node.

this is the step almost every online rahu article skips, and it is the one that makes the difference between a real reading and a horoscope column.

run it in this order.

which house is rahu in. that is the department getting inflated. ketu is automatically in the opposite house, getting thinned.
which sign is it in, and who rules that sign. rahu in vrishchika borrows from mars. rahu in mithuna borrows from mercury. the borrowed character changes the flavour completely.
where is that ruler sitting. if the sign lord is strong and well placed, the node has somewhere sane to route its energy. if it is buried in the 8th or 12th, it does not.
who is rahu sitting with. a conjunction is the loudest signal on the node. rahu next to jupiter is a different animal to rahu next to saturn.
which nakshatra. the 27 nakshatras are a finer grid than signs, and node readings sharpen a lot at that level.

none of these are verdicts. they are the borrowed accent rahu speaks in. the house it sits in still decides which room it is shouting in.

rahu dasha, ketu dasha, and the 18 month transit

In vimshottari, rahu runs for 18 years and ketu for 7. Rahu's is the longest period any graha gets, which is one reason so much of a life gets attributed to it. The transiting nodes change sign roughly every 18 months, moving both ends of the axis at once.

eighteen years is enormous. it is often the whole of ur twenties, or ur entire thirties, or the stretch where u pick a career and a person and a city. if a chunk of ur life had one recognisable flavour, and it lasted about that long, check whether it was a rahu mahadasha.

the classical description of rahu dasha is unusual growth with unusual instability. big moves, foreign places, sudden lifts, and a habit of getting things in a way that does not feel entirely earned. it is described as productive and unsettling at the same time, which is a fair description of ambition generally.

ketu dasha is seven years and gets described as a clearing out. things end, interest drains from things that used to matter, and people report a pull toward being left alone. it is the least commercially appealing dasha in the book, which is probably why so few people try to sell u anything for it.

then there is the transit. the nodes step back one sign every 18 months or so. because they always move as a pair, every shift changes two houses of ur chart at once, and it does so for a year and a half. it is slow weather, and it is worth knowing which two rooms of ur life are currently under it.

the famous combinations

The node combinations people ask about most are guru chandal yoga (jupiter with rahu), grahan dosha (sun or moon with rahu or ketu), and the node conjunction with saturn or mars. All of them describe a tendency in the chart, not an outcome in the life.

myths, one at a time

Rahu and ketu are malefic and always cause harm.

The tradition calls them malefic in the technical sense of disruptive, not evil. Rahu is the graha of unreasonable ambition, and unreasonable ambition builds most of what people admire.

They are invisible planets orbiting somewhere out there.

They are not objects at all. They are intersection points. There is genuinely nothing there.

Rahu in the 7th house means marriage will fail.

It describes intense hunger around partnership, which is a starting condition, not an ending. Read the 7th lord, venus, and the dasha sequence before anyone says anything that final.

Ketu makes u spiritual, so u should not chase worldly things.

Ketu marks where u already have skill and no appetite. Plenty of people build very worldly lives on top of a ketu skill precisely because it costs them no effort.

A rahu dasha of 18 years means 18 bad years.

It means 18 years with a recognisable flavour. Whether it reads as expansion or as chaos depends on where rahu sits, who rules that sign, and what else is running.

Wearing a gomed stone will control rahu.

Nothing wearable moves a node. Gemstone practice is a tradition with real rules of its own, and it should be described honestly rather than sold as planetary control.
