jupiter gives u a year, and touches four houses doing it

guru spends about twelve months in a sign and aspects three more houses from wherever it stands. that is why its transit is the most watched slow movement in the sky after saturn's. here is what it does, counted from ur moon, with the return and the double transit.

saturn takes two and a half years to cross a sign, which is too slow to plan around. the moon takes two and a bit days, which is too fast to mean anything.

jupiter takes about a year. that is a usable unit, and it is most of why guru's transit gets watched more closely than anything else in the sky.

the other reason is reach. jupiter aspects three more houses from wherever it stands, so one transit position is working on four houses of ur chart at once.

the short version

  • jupiter spends about a year per sign and takes roughly twelve years to go round.
  • from ur moon sign, the favourable houses are 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11. the 4th, 8th and 12th are the difficult ones.
  • it aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th from itself while transiting, so four houses are influenced at once.
  • a jupiter return lands roughly at ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60.
  • the double transit, jupiter and saturn on the same house, is uncommon and short, which is why it carries weight.
  • jupiter expands whatever it touches. on the 6th house that is more debt, not less.

why a year is the useful unit

Jupiter takes about twelve months to cross a sign. That resolution is what makes it the workhorse of transit timing: long enough to describe a chapter, short enough to plan around.

put the speeds side by side and the point makes itself.

grahaper signusable as a planning unit?

Mercury~1 monthbarely
Jupiter~1 yearyes. this is the one
Rahu and Ketu~18 monthsyes, but it moves two houses at once
Saturn~2.5 yearsdescribes a chapter, not a plan

this is also why the sign change gets its own name in south india. guru peyarchi is jupiter's ingress into a new sign, and it is marked with temple observances because it resets a year's worth of reading in one moment.

four houses from one position

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from wherever it sits. While transiting, that means one position is influencing four houses of your chart simultaneously.

only three grahas get special aspects, and jupiter's are the two trikonas, which is the best set in the system. we went through why here.

jupiter transiting uralso reaches
1st from the moon5th, 7th, 9th
3rd7th, 9th, 11th
5th9th, 11th, 1st
9th1st, 3rd, 5th
11th3rd, 5th, 7th

which changes the practical question. it is not "what house is jupiter in", it is "which four houses is jupiter working on this year", and that is a more useful thing to know.

the favourable houses, from ur moon

Classical gochar counts a transit from the natal Moon sign, not the ascendant. For Jupiter the favourable houses are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. The 4th, 8th and 12th are read as difficult.

house from the moonreadingwhat it usually touches
2ndfavourablemoney accumulating, family, speech
5thfavourablestudy, children, creative work, luck through intelligence
7thfavourablepartnership. the most cited marriage trigger
9thfavourabletravel, teachers, belief, long study
11thfavourablegains, networks, things arriving without much pushing
4thdifficulthome and mother. expansion where u wanted stability
8thdifficultupheaval, shared money, things surfacing
12thdifficultexpense, loss, things going out of sight

and the whole thing is subject to vedha, the cancellation rule, and adjusted by ashtakavarga bindus. both are in the gochar explainer, and any transit reading that skips them is running at cohort resolution.

it expands. it does not improve.

Jupiter's function is expansion. On a trikona that reads as generosity and luck. On a house you would rather have stayed small, it reads as more of what that house contains.

this is the single most useful correction to popular jupiter content, which treats a guru transit as unambiguously good news.

an expanded 6th house is more debt, more rivals, more health admin. an expanded 12th is more expense and more time spent out of sight. an expanded 8th is more upheaval, arriving with jupiter's characteristic confidence.

which is why the classical list marks 4, 8 and 12 as difficult. that is not superstition, it is a straightforward consequence of what the graha does applied to what those houses hold.

the honest reading of any jupiter transit is therefore two questions, not one: which four houses, and did i want those bigger?

the jupiter return

A Jupiter return is transiting Jupiter arriving back at the position it held at your birth. It takes about twelve years, so it lands around ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60.

it gets less attention than the saturn return and it is the friendlier of the two, which is probably why.

the reading is a reset of whatever jupiter signifies in that chart: belief, direction, what is worth doing. and the twelve-year spacing is genuinely interesting, because it lands close to several thresholds people cross anyway.

returnroughly agewhat typically coincides
1st~12the end of childhood, schooling narrowing
2nd~24first real work, first real independence
3rd~36the shape of a career becoming visible
4th~48reassessment, often of purpose rather than position

the same caution applies as with the saturn return: these are ages where lives change anyway. a cycle that lands near a threshold most people cross regardless is going to look prescient, and that is worth noticing before treating it as evidence.

the double transit

When Jupiter and Saturn both influence the same house at once, by sitting in it or aspecting it, the house is treated as genuinely activated. Because their speeds differ so much, this is uncommon and does not last long.

jupiter supplies enthusiasm and saturn supplies weight. the tradition reads the combination as something that actually happens and then stays happened, which is a real distinction from a transit that produces a burst of interest and nothing else.

it is the most cited rule in marriage timing, applied to the 7th house from both the lagna and the moon. it turns up in career readings applied to the 10th.

and it is one of the few transit rules with genuine scarcity built in. a claim that only holds during an uncommon short window is a claim that could be wrong, which is more than most transit content risks.

retrograde four months a year, every year

Jupiter is retrograde for roughly four months of every year. That is about a third of the calendar, every year, for everybody, and it passes without comment.

worth stating plainly next to the noise about mercury's three weeks.

graharetrograde per yearsharepublic reaction
Mercury~60-65 days~18%three weeks of content, three times a year
Jupiter~4 months~33%none
Saturn~4.5 months~38%none

and in classical terms a retrograde graha gains cheshta bala, motional strength. a vakri jupiter during transit is not a weakened jupiter. it is one going back over ground, which for a graha of belief and judgement reads as reconsidering rather than failing.

myths, one at a time

A Jupiter transit is always good news.

It expands what it touches. On the 4th, 8th or 12th from ur moon, the classical list reads it as difficult, and for good reason.

Jupiter's transit is read from my sun sign.

Classical gochar counts from the moon sign. Sun sign transit content is western astrology wearing sanskrit vocabulary.

Guru peyarchi is a mystical event.

It is jupiter entering a new sign. The observances are real and meaningful; the underlying event is an ingress on a published schedule.

Jupiter retrograde is a problem.

It happens for a third of every year, every year. Classical scoring treats retrograde as motional strength.

The Jupiter return explains what happened at 24.

It lands near ages where lives change anyway. A cycle that coincides with thresholds most people cross will always look prescient.

A Jupiter transit reading is personal to me.

Before ashtakavarga it is a moon sign cohort reading, shared with roughly a twelfth of the population.

faq

how long does jupiter stay in one sign?

about a year, and a full circuit of the zodiac takes roughly twelve. that is why its transit is used for timing: a year is a unit u can actually plan around.

which houses is the jupiter transit good in?

counted from ur moon sign, the classical gochar list is the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. the 4th, 8th and 12th are the ones traditionally read as difficult.

what is guru peyarchi?

the tamil term for jupiter changing sign. it is treated as a significant annual event across south india, with temple observances attached, and it is simply the sign ingress of a transiting graha.

does jupiter aspect houses while transiting?

yes, and this is what makes it unusual. jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th from wherever it is, so a single transit position is influencing four houses of ur chart at once.

what is a jupiter return?

transiting jupiter coming back to the sign, or the exact degree, it occupied at ur birth. it happens roughly every twelve years, so around ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60.

why does jupiter go retrograde every year?

because earth overtakes it once per orbit. jupiter is retrograde for about four months of every year, every year, and nobody has ever cancelled anything over it.

what is the double transit?

jupiter and saturn both influencing the same house at once, by placement or aspect. because their speeds differ so much it is uncommon and short, and the tradition treats a house under both as genuinely activated.

does a jupiter transit guarantee good things?

no. jupiter expands what it touches, and the 6th house is debt, illness and rivals. an expanded difficult house is more of the difficulty, not less.

how many people share my jupiter transit result?

about a twelfth of everyone alive, because gochar is counted from the moon sign. ashtakavarga bindus are how that gets narrowed to ur own chart.

is the jupiter transit more important than my dasha?

no. the dasha is the timing engine and runs in chunks of years. a jupiter transit is generally read as triggering something a dasha has already made available.

what does jupiter transiting my natal moon mean?

it is one of the more watched positions, read as a year in which the mind gets more room. it happens roughly once every twelve years and lasts about twelve months.

when is the jupiter transit used for marriage timing?

jupiter crossing the 7th house, the 7th lord, or the natal moon is the most cited trigger. it is used alongside the dasha rather than instead of it.
