when will i get married, and what a chart can actually say

it is the single most asked question in indian astrology, and it usually arrives with a relative attached to it.

the honest answer has two halves, and most people only ever get told one of them. the first half is that yes, there is a real method, it is specific, and u can follow it yourself. the second half is that the method produces windows, not dates, and anyone handing u a month and a year has quietly stopped doing astrology.

here is the whole thing, both halves.

the short version

marriage is read from the 7th house and its lord, with the 2nd (family) and 11th (fulfilled desires) alongside, and the 8th for durability.
venus is the karaka for partnership in every chart. jupiter gets extra weight in a woman's chart in the classical texts.
timing comes from the dasha sequence: periods of the 7th lord, grahas in the 7th, venus, and the 2nd and 11th lords.
the timing is triggered by transits, most often jupiter crossing the 7th house, the 7th lord, or the natal moon.
what this produces is a window of a year or two. it cannot produce a date, and it cannot produce a person.

the honest answer first

Vedic astrology times marriage by finding which planetary periods activate the 7th house, then checking which slow transits reinforce them. That produces a window of roughly one to two years, sometimes more than one such window in a life. It does not produce a date, and it does not produce a person.

this matters because of how the answer usually reaches people. an astrologer says "the period from mid 2027 into 2028 is strong for this." by the time it has passed through one aunt, it is "he said 2027." by the second aunt it is a wedding date.

so start by knowing what the tool's actual resolution is. the dasha system runs in chunks of months to years. transits like jupiter sit in one sign for about a year. u are working with instruments whose smallest tick is a season. asking them for a date is like asking a calendar for the time.

what the chart is actually looking at

The 7th house from the lagna is the house of partnership. Its lord, wherever it sits, carries the subject through the chart. Venus is the significator for relationship. The 2nd, 11th and 8th houses fill in family, fulfilment and durability.

step one: which dasha are u in

In vimshottari, the periods most associated with marriage are the mahadasha or antardasha of the 7th lord, of any graha sitting in the 7th house, of venus, and of the 2nd and 11th lords. The strongest signal is when the major period and the sub period both point at partnership.

the vimshottari dasha is the clock the whole system runs on. 120 years split across nine grahas, each getting a fixed run, starting from wherever ur moon was at birth.

inside every mahadasha, the same nine grahas each get a sub period, called an antardasha, in the same order. so u are always in two periods at once, and it is the pair that matters.

a venus mahadasha lasts twenty years, which is far too wide to be useful on its own. but a venus mahadasha with the 7th lord's antardasha running inside it narrows u to a stretch of months, and that is where the method starts producing something usable.

a rough ranking of what practitioners weight, strongest first:

mahadasha and antardasha both belonging to grahas tied to the 7th.
mahadasha of the 7th lord, with any antardasha of a graha in or aspecting the 7th.
venus periods generally, especially with a well placed venus.
periods of the 2nd and 11th lords, since those two are the desire-and-family pair.
periods of grahas sitting in the 7th, whatever else they rule.

step two: the transit that pulls the trigger

Dashas say which years are available. Transits say when, inside those years, something moves. Jupiter is the transit most used for marriage, because it takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac and spends roughly a year in each sign.

the classic triggers, in order of how often u will see them cited:

jupiter transiting the 7th house from ur lagna, or from ur moon.
jupiter transiting over the 7th lord, wherever that graha sits.
jupiter transiting over ur natal moon, or the 7th from it.
saturn's involvement, which is slower and read more as consolidating than as sparking.

then there is the double transit rule, one of the more elegant ideas in gochar. it says a house genuinely activates when both jupiter and saturn influence it at the same time, whether by sitting in it or aspecting it. jupiter alone is enthusiasm. saturn alone is weight. both together is something that actually happens and then stays happened.

because saturn moves at about two and a half years per sign and jupiter at about one, the double transit on any given house is uncommon and does not last long. that scarcity is precisely why the rule is useful.

step three: the navamsa cross check

The navamsa (D9) does not carry timing. It is used to check whether what the 7th house promises actually holds up under magnification, by looking at the same grahas in the finer nine-part grid.

the check is simple. take the 7th lord and venus, and see what happens to them in the D9. a graha that looks strong in the rashi chart and lands somewhere uncomfortable in the navamsa is described as promising more than it delivers. a graha that improves is the opposite.

a worked example, end to end

The method is a stack: identify the 7th lord and venus, find which dasha periods belong to them, then look for a jupiter transit inside those periods. Where all three line up is the window.

say ur lagna is kanya. that makes meena ur 7th house, so ur 7th lord is jupiter.

notice what came out of six steps of real technique. a stretch of months, with a reason attached. that is the honest ceiling of the method, and it is genuinely more than nothing.

notice also what did not come out. a date. a name. a city. a guarantee.

what delay actually means in a chart

Delayed marriage is most often read from saturn's involvement with the 7th house or its lord, or a 7th lord in a difficult house. What the classical texts mean by delay is later than the social norm of the era they were written in, which is a much younger benchmark than today's.

this is worth sitting with, because the word does real damage.

a text written when most marriages happened in the late teens calls twenty six a delay. read in 2026, in a country where people routinely marry in their late twenties and thirties, that same placement is describing a completely ordinary life.

the placements usually named:

saturn in or aspecting the 7th house, or conjunct the 7th lord.
the 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th.
venus badly placed or hemmed in by difficult company.
saturn and venus together, read as desire meeting patience.

and the honest reading of all of them is the same: this is a chart where partnership is built slowly rather than fallen into. saturn does not prevent things. saturn charges interest in the form of time.

why marriage predictions go wrong

Three ordinary reasons: the birth time was wrong so every house is wrong, the window was years wide and got retold as a date, or the prediction landed inside the age band where most marriages happen anyway.

that third one deserves its own paragraph, because nobody says it out loud.

first marriages in india cluster heavily. the overwhelming majority happen inside a fairly narrow band of years in a person's twenties. so a prediction of "between 26 and 29" is going to look impressively accurate for most people it is given to, without the chart having contributed anything at all.

that is not proof astrology is wrong. it is a warning about what counts as evidence. a prediction only tells u something if it could have been wrong, and a window covering the most common years for the outcome could barely have been.

the first reason is more fixable. the 7th house depends entirely on ur lagna, and ur lagna changes every two hours. a birth time off by ninety minutes can shift ur whole house frame, which means ur 7th lord is a different planet and the entire reading was about somebody else. how accurate ur birth time needs to be covers the cost precisely.

how to tell a reading from a sales pitch

A real reading names the technique, gives a window, and states what would make it wrong. A sales pitch names a fear, gives a date, and attaches a fee.

myths, one at a time

A good astrologer can give me the exact date.

The instruments run in months and years. Dashas move in chunks, jupiter sits in a sign for about a year. A date is outside the resolution of the method.

A low kundli matching score means the marriage will not happen.

Matching and timing are different questions entirely. Ashtakoota scores two people against each other and says nothing about when.

Manglik dosha will block my marriage.

Manglik is mars in one of six houses, with a long list of traditional cancellations. It is a position, not a verdict.

If the window passes and nothing happens, the chart was wrong.

A window says the chart is loud in those years. It does not say u were introduced to anyone. Astrology does not do the introductions.

My navamsa will show me who I marry.

It shows the register of partnership u are wired for. Faces, names and professions are not in there.

Saturn on the 7th means I will never marry.

It is the classic marker for later and slower, not for never. And the benchmark for late was set by texts written in a very different century.
