mars reaches three houses, not one

mangal aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th from wherever it sits, which is why it turns up in so many readings. here is what it actually carries, why exaltation in makara makes sense, and the honest version of the manglik conversation.

mars turns up in more readings than almost any other graha, and most people assume that is because mars is dramatic.

it is not. it is because mars aspects three houses instead of one. from wherever it sits, it reaches the 4th, the 7th and the 8th, which means a single placement is touching a third of ur chart.

that structural fact explains most of mangal's reputation, including the dosha half the country has been frightened with.

the short version

  • mars rules mesha and vrishchika. exalted in makara at 28 degrees, debilitated in karka at 28 degrees.
  • it aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th from itself. that reach is why it shows up everywhere.
  • it carries energy, courage, conflict, land, blood, surgery and machinery. force applied on purpose.
  • it is a natural malefic, and also the yogakaraka for karka and simha lagnas. both are true at once.
  • manglik dosha is mars in six of twelve houses. the base rate is enormous and the cancellations are long.
  • dasha of 7 years, about 45 days per sign, strongest in the 10th house by digbala.

the three aspects, and why they matter

Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and the 8th. So one Mars placement is influencing four houses at once, which is a third of the chart from a single position.

only three grahas get special aspects: mars takes the 4th and 8th, jupiter the 5th and 9th, saturn the 3rd and 10th. everything else reaches the 7th and stops.

mars inalso reacheswhich is
1st4th, 7th, 8thhome, marriage, upheaval
2nd5th, 8th, 9thstudy, upheaval, belief
4th7th, 10th, 11thmarriage, career, income
7th10th, 1st, 2ndcareer, self, money
10th1st, 4th, 5thself, home, creativity

look at the first row. mars in the 1st house reaches the 4th, the 7th and the 8th, which are home, marriage and upheaval. that is four of the six houses on the manglik list, from one placement. the dosha is not describing something mysterious. it is describing a graha with unusual reach standing in the houses that matter most to a family.

what mangal actually carries

Mars signifies energy, courage, competition and conflict, along with younger siblings, land and property, blood, surgery, machinery and engineering. The through-line is force applied deliberately.

domainwhat mars covers
Energydrive, stamina under pressure, the willingness to start
Conflictargument, competition, litigation, the appetite for a fight
Siblingsbhratru karaka, read alongside the 3rd house
Landproperty, real estate, boundaries, anything with a fence
The bodyblood, muscle, accidents, surgery, anything sharp
Workengineering, machinery, the armed forces, police, sport, surgery

the classical cabinet is a useful frame here. the sun is the king, the moon the queen, mercury the prince, jupiter and venus the advisers, saturn the servant, and mars is the commander. it does not set policy. it executes it, and it is very good at that.

makara and karka

Mars is exalted in Makara at 28 degrees and debilitated in Karka at 28 degrees. Makara is saturn's sign of structure and patience. Karka is the moon's sign of feeling and protection.

makara gives mars the one thing it does not have: a plan. force with structure behind it is the most productive form of mars there is, which is why the exaltation sits in the sign of the graha that otherwise opposes it most. that is a genuinely elegant piece of design.

karka is the opposite environment. a sign built around comfort, protection and avoiding confrontation is the hardest place for a graha whose whole business is confrontation. the classical reading is not that the person lacks drive, it is that the drive turns inward, which usually reads as frustration rather than force.

note also that both peaks sit at 28 degrees, very near the end of a sign. exaltation degrees are specific, and a mars at 3 degrees of makara is exalted by sign but nowhere near its peak. exalted and debilitated planets has the full table.

the graha that is both malefic and best friend

Mars is a natural malefic, meaning harsh in effect. It is also the yogakaraka, the single most helpful graha, for Karka and Simha lagnas, because for those two ascendants it rules both a kendra and a trikona.

this is the cleanest demonstration of why "is mars good or bad" is an unanswerable question.

lagnamars rulesso mars is
Karka5th and 10thyogakaraka. the best graha in the chart.
Simha4th and 9thyogakaraka. the best graha in the chart.
Mesha1st and 8thlagna lord, so helpful, with the 8th attached
Vrishabha7th and 12thmixed. a kendra and a dusthana
Mithuna6th and 11thdifficult by rulership

so for a sixth of all charts, mars is the most helpful graha there is, and its dasha is often the making of the person. that is the same argument that applies to saturn, and it is why ur lagna has to be settled before anybody says anything about any graha.

the manglik question, honestly

Manglik dosha, or kuja dosha, is Mars sitting in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. That is six houses out of twelve, so before anyone opens a chart the base rate is already enormous. The classical texts also list a long set of cancellations.

we took the whole thing apart in manglik dosha is a house number, not a sentence, so here is only the part that belongs in a post about mars.

why those six houses? look back at the aspect table. from the 1st, mars reaches the 4th, 7th and 8th. from the 7th it reaches the 10th, 1st and 2nd. the six houses on the manglik list are exactly the ones from which mars either sits in or aspects the houses of home and marriage. the rule is not arbitrary, it is aspect geometry.

and why it is oversold. six of twelve houses is half the chart. depending on which variant of the rule is applied, and whether it is counted from the lagna, the moon or venus, the share of people who qualify runs from very high to almost everybody. a condition that common cannot function as a warning.

the honest reading of a mars in the 7th is a partnership with heat in it: directness, argument that clears the air, and a low tolerance for being managed. that is a real thing to know about someone. it is not a reason to call off a wedding.

mars in each of the twelve houses

Mars in a house applies force to that department of life. Read each line as "this is where u push, and where u are willing to have the argument".

housemars there reads as
1stphysically forward, direct, quick to act. often athletic. a visible temper or a visible drive, sometimes both.
2ndsharp speech. money made and spent fast. arguments that involve family.
3rdone of its best. an upachaya house. real nerve, competitive siblings, work done with the hands.
4tha charged home. property matters, and a restlessness about staying put.
5thcompetitive intelligence. good at games, argument, and anything scored. strong-willed children.
6thexcellent placement. mars beats rivals, thrives on deadlines, and turns conflict into work.
7ththe manglik one people mean. partnership with heat in it. directness, and low patience with being managed.
8thintensity around upheaval, surgery, shared money and things kept private. resilient under crisis.
9thbelief argued rather than inherited. long journeys, and a combative relationship with doctrine.
10thdigbala. its strongest house. a career built on push, and visible authority earned by doing.
11than upachaya house. gains through effort and competition. friends who are also rivals.
12thenergy spent out of sight. work behind the scenes, foreign places, and anger that goes inward.

notice the 3rd, 6th and 11th again. those are the upachaya houses, and mars is genuinely good in all three. a graha classed as malefic doing its best work in three specific houses is exactly the kind of nuance the popular version flattens.

myths, one at a time

Mars means anger.

It means force applied on purpose. Where it goes depends on the house, the sign, and what mars rules for ur lagna.

Manglik dosha will ruin a marriage.

It is mars in six of twelve houses, with a long list of classical cancellations. The base rate alone should end the fear.

Mars is bad for everyone.

It is the yogakaraka, the single best graha, for karka and simha lagnas. That is a sixth of all charts.

A debilitated mars in karka means no drive.

The classical reading is drive turned inward. Frustration rather than absence, and cancellations apply.

Mars in the 6th or 8th is dangerous.

The 6th is one of its best houses, because a malefic in a house of conflict is doing what it is built for. The 8th reads as resilience under upheaval.

Mars aspects are aggressive by nature.

The 4th, 7th and 8th aspects are geometry, not temperament. They are why mars appears in so many readings, and that is a fact about reach.
