ur lagna matters more than ur sun sign
the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute u were born. it decides where all twelve houses land, which planets are on ur side, and why two people born the same day can read completely differently.
ur sun sign is one fact: which slice of the zodiac the sun was standing in. it takes the sun a whole month to leave that slice, so u share it with roughly a twelfth of everyone alive.
ur lagna moves about a hundred times faster than that. it changes every two hours. two babies born in the same hospital on the same morning, four hours apart, get different lagnas and therefore different charts.
and here is the part that actually matters: the lagna is not one more label. it is the frame every other thing in ur chart gets measured against.

what the lagna actually is
The lagna is the point of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place u were born. Whichever sign that point fell in becomes ur first house, and all twelve houses are counted forward from there.
every other position in ur chart answers the question "where was this thing in the sky?" the lagna answers a different question: "where were u standing, and what was coming up in front of u?"
that is why it needs ur birthplace as well as ur birth time. the sun was in the same spot for everyone on earth that minute. the eastern horizon was not. mumbai and london had completely different bits of sky rising at the same instant.
and because the earth turns a full circle in 24 hours, it drags all twelve signs past that horizon in the same 24 hours. twelve signs, twenty four hours, two hours each. that is the whole speed calculation.
why it outranks ur sun sign
A sun sign tells u the position of one graha. The lagna tells u the position of every graha relative to ur life, because it decides which house each one falls in. Change the lagna and nothing in the sky moves, but every single interpretation does.
this is easier to see with an example than an argument.
say saturn was sitting in makara on the day u were born. that is fixed. nobody can argue with it.

same saturn. same degree. same day. four completely different lives being described, and the only thing that changed was what time of day u showed up.
that is the argument in one table. the sun sign is one data point. the lagna is the coordinate system.
the frame, not the picture
Signs describe how a graha behaves. Houses describe which department of ur life it works in. Since the lagna is what numbers the houses, it converts raw sky positions into statements about u specifically.
vedic astrology mostly uses whole sign houses, which keeps this refreshingly simple. ur rising sign is the entire 1st house. the next sign along is the entire 2nd. no fractions, no cusps, no arguing about where one house ends.
so if ur lagna is mithuna, then mithuna is ur 1st, karka is ur 2nd, simha is ur 3rd, and so on right round. any graha in simha is doing 3rd house work for u, whatever else is true about it.

ur lagna lord is u
The graha that rules ur lagna sign is called the lagna lord, and it acts as ur stand in throughout the chart. Whichever house it sits in is the area of life u keep getting pulled into, whether or not u planned it.
this is the single most useful move a beginner can learn, so here it is as a recipe.

- find who rules it. mesha and vrishchika belong to mars, vrishabha and tula to venus, mithuna and kanya to mercury, karka to the moon, simha to the sun, dhanu and meena to jupiter, makara and kumbha to saturn.
- find where that graha is sitting in ur chart, by house.
- that house is where ur life keeps happening.
a kanya lagna with mercury in the 10th is a person whose identity keeps routing through work. a kanya lagna with mercury in the 12th is the same person, wired instead toward the private, the foreign, the behind the scenes.
neither is better. they are different rooms. but knowing which room ur own ruler is standing in explains a surprising amount of why u keep ending up where u end up.
the second question is condition: is that graha strong, is it comfortable in the sign it is in, is it hemmed in by difficult company. the nine grahas explained covers what each one wants and where it struggles.
which grahas are on ur side
Because the lagna sets house numbering, it also sets which grahas rule good houses for u and which rule difficult ones. This is called functional benefic and malefic, and it means the same planet genuinely helps one lagna and complicates another.
the principle is short. houses 1, 5 and 9 are the trikonas, the supportive ones. houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the kendras, the structural ones. houses 6, 8 and 12 are the difficult ones, the dusthanas.
a graha takes on the character of the houses it rules for u. so saturn is not universally hard. for a vrishabha lagna, saturn rules the 9th and 10th, two of the best houses in the chart, and it becomes one of the most helpful grahas u have.
that specific combination has a name. when one graha rules both a kendra and a trikona, it is called a yogakaraka, and it is the strongest single ally a lagna can be given. only six lagnas get one.

one more rule worth knowing: a graha sitting close to ur lagna degree gets very loud. within a few degrees of the ascending point, that graha starts doing the introducing for u. mars there reads as forceful, saturn as guarded, venus as easy to like, whatever the lagna sign itself would have said on its own.
how to find yours
Finding a lagna needs ur birth date, exact birth time and birth place, run through an ephemeris with a sidereal ayanamsa. There is no table u can look it up in, because it depends on ur latitude and the exact minute.
u can get a rough sense from one fact: the lagna is roughly the sun's sign at sunrise, and it advances by about one sign every two hours after that. so a person born close to sunrise usually has a lagna near their sun sign, and someone born twelve hours later is usually about six signs away.
that is a sanity check, not a calculation. the real answer needs the maths, because sunrise time moves with the season and ur latitude.

chandra lagna, and what to do without a birth time
Chandra lagna means reading the chart as if ur moon sign were the first house. Vedic astrology uses it alongside the real lagna as a second opinion, and it is the standard fallback when the birth time is unknown or unreliable.
this is one of the practical differences between vedic and western practice. vedic astrologers routinely run the chart twice, once from the lagna and once from the moon, and pay attention to what shows up in both.
the moon only needs ur birth date and rough time, since it moves about thirteen degrees a day. so if u genuinely do not know when u were born, u still have a real chart to work with. u just do not have the house layer.
what u should not do is invent a time. noon is not neutral, it is a specific lagna, and it will hand u twelve confident house placements that are probably wrong. saying "i do not know my birth time" is a better reading than a guessed one.
