seven things u can see with ur own eyes, plus two spots where the moon crosses the sun's path. that is the whole cast. here is what each one does, and what exalted, debilitated and combust really mean once u stop reading them as school grades.

vedic astrology reads nine grahas. western astrology reads ten planets. seven are the same on both lists. the argument is about the rest, and it is a better argument than it sounds.

the seven shared ones are exactly what a person can watch moving across the sky without a telescope.

the two extra vedic ones are not objects at all. and the three extra western ones were all found after the tradition had already settled its shape.

this post goes through all nine, says what each one does in a chart, and explains why exalted, debilitated and combust do not mean good, bad and worse.

why they are called grahas, not planets

Graha comes from a sanskrit word meaning to grab or seize. It says what something does, not what it is made of. That is why the Sun and Moon are grahas even though neither is a planet, and why Rahu and Ketu are grahas even though neither is an object at all.

translating graha as planet is convenient and causes real trouble. it makes people ask why the Sun is on a list of planets, and it makes Rahu and Ketu look like an error.

the original idea is simpler. a graha is anything in the sky that moves against the fixed stars, and that the tradition treats as grabbing hold of some part of ur life.

seven of them are things u can see. the other two are the places where eclipses become possible, which is an excellent reason for an ancient sky-watcher to take them seriously.

those seven visible ones are also why a week has seven days. that is not borrowing. several cultures worked it out separately, because there are seven things up there that move. Ravivara is the Sun's day, Somavara the Moon's, Mangalavara is Mars, on through to Shanivara for Saturn. the english names carry the same seven, through norse and latin.

the seven visible grahas, one at a time

The Sun runs authority and the self. The Moon runs mind and mood. Mars runs drive and conflict. Mercury runs speech and thinking. Jupiter runs belief and growth. Venus runs comfort and love. Saturn runs time, limits and the reward that comes late.

Sun (Surya)

authority, backbone, energy, ur father, and whatever u take seriously enough to build ur life around. it rules Simha and is exalted in Mesha.

it also burns anything that comes too close, which is where combustion comes from. a strong Sun usually reads as someone with a clear centre. a strained one reads as someone still working out their relationship with authority, often their own.

Moon (Chandra)

the mind, mood, memory, ur mother, and how u actually get through a day. in indian practice this is the most important spot in the whole chart, which is why ur rashi is ur moon sign.

it rules Karka and is exalted in Vrishabha. it moves faster than anything else up there, about 13 degrees a day, which is exactly why ur moon sign needs a birth time to pin down.

Mars (Mangal)

nerve, temper, competition, physical energy, property, brothers and sisters, and anything sharp. it rules Mesha and Vrishchika and is exalted in Makara.

Mars has a bad name it only half deserves. it is the willingness to start a fight. that is a problem in a marriage and an excellent thing in a surgeon.

it is also the planet behind the whole manglik conversation, which we take apart in the manglik explainer.

Mercury (Budha)

speech, thinking, trade, wit, and the way u argue. it rules Mithuna and Kanya, and it is exalted in Kanya. that makes it the only graha exalted in a sign it also owns.

Mercury orbits closest to the sun, so from here it never appears more than about 28 degrees away from it. which means Mercury is combust more often than anything else. that is orbit, not a flaw in ur chart.

Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati)

belief, teachers, right and wrong, growth, money in the sense of things getting bigger, and giving people the benefit of the doubt. it rules Dhanu and Meena and is exalted in Karka. classically the great good guy.

one catch worth knowing. growth is not automatically good. Jupiter makes bigger whatever it touches. that is wonderful for opportunity and unhelpful for a bad habit.

Venus (Shukra)

taste, romance, comfort, art, luxury, and whatever u find beautiful. it rules Vrishabha and Tula and is exalted in Meena.

in classical practice Venus stands for the wife in a man's chart, and Jupiter for the husband in a woman's. that split says more about the century those texts were written in than about anything in the sky.

Saturn (Shani)

time, limits, discipline, delay, hard work, and the reward that turns up late. it rules Makara and Kumbha and is exalted in Tula.

the most feared graha, and the most honest one. Saturn does not take things away at random. it takes away what was not built properly, and it gives slowly to whatever was.

its 29.5 year orbit is what creates sade sati.

rahu and ketu: real geometry wearing a myth

Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes: the spots where the moon's tilted path crosses the earth's path around the sun. Eclipses can only happen when the sun and moon are near them. The two are always exactly opposite each other, and they always move backwards.

the moon's path is tilted by about five degrees against the earth's. that tilt is the whole reason we do not get an eclipse every month. usually the moon passes above or below.

there are only two places where the moon crosses the line. those two places are Rahu and Ketu.

the old story says a demon drank the nectar of immortality, got beheaded, and lived on as two pieces: the head, Rahu, which swallows the sun, and the body, Ketu.

as a story it is mythology. as a description of where eclipses come from it is exact. someone packed an astronomy fact into a shape people could carry for a thousand years without writing it down.

two consequences that follow directly from the geometry:

they are always exactly opposite. if Rahu is at 5 degrees Kumbha, Ketu is at 5 degrees Simha. no exceptions, ever.
they always move backwards through the zodiac, at a steady rate, completing a circuit in about 18.6 years. the eclipse seasons that shift about every eighteen months are this cycle, which we covered in what an eclipse does to a birth chart.

as for meaning, Rahu is read as hunger, obsession, ambition, and the thing u overdo. Ketu is read as letting go, a skill u seem to arrive with, and the thing u put down without noticing.

neither one owns a sign. so they take their whole personality from where they land and what is looking at them. that is why two Rahu placements can read completely differently.

why there is no uranus, neptune or pluto

None of the three can be seen without a telescope, and they were found in 1781, 1846 and 1930, long after vedic astrology had set its shape. Most vedic astrologers still leave them out. A few use them as extra commentary. Nobody is in charge, so the question stays open.

the honest version is not that the tradition looked at them and said no. it is that the tradition was built entirely out of what the eye can see, and by the time anyone spotted the outer three the framework had been steady for over a thousand years.

the case for leaving them out is that everything fits together. the dashas, the aspects, the dignities, the yogas, are all tuned for nine grahas. adding three does not extend the system, it breaks its arithmetic. vimshottari dasha shares 120 years between nine planets. there is no slot for a tenth.

the case for putting them in is that some modern astrologers find Uranus useful for sudden shocks and Neptune for things going blurry. they use them as notes in the margin, not as full members.

we stay with nine. it is the standard, it keeps the dasha maths intact, and the tradition already has Rahu for shocks and Ketu for things dissolving. which is roughly the job people give the outer planets anyway.

exalted, debilitated, own sign: what dignity actually means

Dignity is about the working conditions a planet finds itself in, not the quality of ur life. Exalted means the sign brings out what that graha is best at. Debilitated means it does not. A debilitated planet usually reads as effort and skill that arrives late, not failure.

reading dignity like school grades is the most common beginner mistake in this whole subject. exalted does not mean good. debilitated does not mean doomed.

two things worth knowing about this table.

exaltation is strongest at one exact degree and fades away on either side. so a planet exalted at the far end of its sign is far less exalted than the word makes it sound.

and Rahu and Ketu have no agreed exaltation. the old sources genuinely disagree. so anyone who tells u one with confidence is picking a side and not mentioning it.

there is also neecha bhanga, which means the debilitation is cancelled. it is a set of classical conditions where a debilitated planet recovers, and sometimes ends up doing better than it would have otherwise.

that rule exists for a reason. the tradition never meant debilitation as a life sentence.

combust and retrograde, without the drama

Combust means a planet is close enough to the sun to be washed out by its glare. That is a fact about what u can see, before it is any kind of reading. Retrograde means a planet looks like it is going backwards from here. That is a trick of viewing angle, not a planet changing direction.

combustion

when a graha comes within a certain number of degrees of the sun, u cannot see it any more. that is the whole physical fact. the traditional distances are Moon 12 degrees, Mars 17, Mercury 14, Jupiter 11, Venus 10 and Saturn 15.

now here is the thing. Mercury never appears more than about 28 degrees from the sun, and Venus never more than about 47. so both of them are combust far more often than anything else.

that is orbit, not a message about u. anyone treating a combust Mercury as remarkable has not counted how often it happens.

as for meaning: a combust planet is usually read as one whose own agenda gets swallowed by the Sun's. not destroyed. outranked.

retrogression

no planet ever reverses. what u are seeing is earth overtaking a slower planet on the inside of the track. it is the same thing that happens when ur train passes a slower one and the slower one seems to slide backwards. it is entirely about where ur watching from.

it is also much more common than people think. over any ten years, Saturn is retrograde about 37 percent of the time, Jupiter about 30, Mercury about 19, Mars about 10 and Venus about 7. Rahu and Ketu are retrograde permanently, by definition.

the two traditions read it differently. western astrology tends to say the planet's energy turns inward or gets delayed. some classical vedic sources say a retrograde planet is unusually strong, because at that moment it is closest to earth and shining brightest. that last bit is true and u can check it.

so we give u the fact and tell u the meaning is argued over, instead of pretending it is settled.

planetary friendships, briefly

Vedic astrology sorts every graha's relationship with every other one into friend, neutral or enemy. That decides how comfortable a planet is when it lands in a sign someone else owns. There is a second, temporary layer too, based on how close two planets sit in one particular chart.

look at the pattern and it stops seeming random. the Sun, Moon and Mars group together. Venus and Saturn group on the other side.

the tradition is sorting by job. the hot, pushy, personal grahas on one side. the cool, structural, impersonal ones on the other.

on top of that fixed scheme sits a temporary one, based on how many signs apart two planets happen to be in the chart in front of u. put both together and u get five grades, from great friend to great enemy. that is how astrologers weigh a placement in their head, without a calculator.

what gets repeated, and what is actually true

A debilitated planet ruins that part of my life.

It describes a planet working somewhere that does not suit it. That usually reads as effort, and skill arriving later than u wanted. The tradition also has neecha bhanga, a formal set of conditions that cancel debilitation outright, which would be a strange rule to have if debilitation were fatal.

Saturn is a malefic, so Saturn placements are bad news.

Saturn limits, delays, and insists u do the work properly. That is unpleasant, and often useful. The classical texts call it the great teacher, which is not the same thing as the great punisher.

Rahu and Ketu are demons in my chart.

They are the two spots where the moon's path crosses the sun's. The demon is a memory aid for eclipse geometry, and a very good one, because it lasted several thousand years.

Mercury retrograde will break my plans.

Mercury is retrograde about 19 percent of the time. That is roughly one day in five of ur whole life. Anything that constant would just be what normal feels like.

Vedic astrology ignores Pluto because it is not a real planet.

It leaves Pluto out because Pluto was found in 1930, about two thousand years after the system settled its shape around what the eye can see. The 2006 argument about whether Pluto counts as a planet had nothing to do with it.

An exalted planet guarantees success in that area.

Exaltation is strongest at one exact degree and fades from there. A planet exalted at the far end of its sign is exalted in name only. And dignity says nothing at all about which houses that planet runs.

mistakes worth not making

reading dignity like a school grade. exalted and debilitated describe conditions. they do not predict outcomes, and they do not beat house rulership.
panicking about a combust Mercury. Mercury never gets more than about 28 degrees from the sun. being combust is close to its normal state, not an event.
treating Rahu and Ketu as if they act alone. they own no signs, so they take their whole character from where they land and what is looking at them.
importing western planet meanings wholesale. vedic Venus covers comfort, cars and an easy life as much as romance. vedic Saturn covers hard work as much as karma.
forgetting how fast things move. ur moon placement is shared with everyone born within two days of u. ur lagna is shared with people born within two hours. weight them accordingly.

the receipt

the exaltation degrees, the sign rulerships and the fixed friendship scheme all follow Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, checked against Phaladeepika. the combustion distances are the widely used vedic set, and they do vary a little between sources. worth knowing before someone quotes one at u as if it were fixed.

the retrograde percentages are not a traditional claim. we worked them out ourselves, by stepping through 3,650 days from 2020 and measuring how each planet appeared to move: Saturn 37.4 percent, Jupiter 29.6, Mercury 19.0, Mars 10.4, Venus 7.3.

the 28 and 47 degree figures for Mercury and Venus came out of that same run, and they match the published values.

and the eclipse geometry behind Rahu and Ketu, a moon path tilted about 5 degrees and a node cycle of about 18.6 years, is standard astronomy.

dignity is working conditions, not a grade. debilitation has a formal cancellation rule precisely because it was never meant as a life sentence.
combustion is about what u can see. Mercury is combust constantly because it physically cannot get far from the sun.
retrograde is a viewing angle. Saturn spends over a third of its time that way, so it cannot possibly mean what the panic posts say it means.
