three signs, three jobs

a birth chart is a photo of the sky, taken at the exact minute u were born, from the exact place u were born. every planet is somewhere in that photo. three of those spots do most of the talking: the sun, the moon and the eastern horizon.

sun sign. where the sun was standing. it moves about one degree a day and takes a month to cross a whole sign, so it changes slowly. this is the sign people mean when they just say "my sign".

moon sign. where the moon was standing. the moon is quick: about thirteen degrees a day, a whole sign every two and a bit days. in vedic astrology this is usually what someone means when they ask ur rashi.

rising sign, or lagna. the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at that exact minute. this one ignores the date completely. it runs on the clock and the map. it changes about every two hours.

three speeds. three jobs. that is the whole reason they land on three different signs for most of us.

sun sign: the one everyone already knows

the sun is the slowest of the three, and that is exactly why it became the famous one.

a newspaper can print twelve sun-sign forecasts and cover everybody alive. try that with the moon, which changes every couple of days, or the rising sign, which changes every two hours. u would need a fresh column before lunch.

western astrology reads the sun as who u are: ur ego, ur will, the direction ur growing in. vedic astrology gives the sun that job too, but almost never leads with it. it is one placement among several, not the headline.

moon sign: the one Vedic astrology reads first

if a family astrologer has ever read ur chart, the first sign they said out loud was almost certainly ur moon, not ur sun. in vedic practice it is called chandra rashi, and most of the reading hangs off it.

the moon is read as mind, mood and instinct. not what ur trying to do, but how u take in what happens to u.

it also does a very practical job. wherever ur moon was, it was inside one of the 27 nakshatras, and that nakshatra sets the starting point for ur vimshottari dasha, the timeline much of vedic prediction runs on. get the moon wrong and the whole timeline slides with it.

which is why the moon sign needs a real birth time. it crosses a full sign in about two days, so ur birthday alone narrows it down without settling it. someone born late at night can land on a different moon sign than someone born that same morning.

rising sign: the one that changes every two hours

the rising sign, or lagna, is whichever sign was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment u were born. the date has nothing to do with it. it is entirely about the clock and the place, because it is the earth's spin that lifts each sign over the horizon in turn.

and the earth spins fast. a whole sign clears the horizon in about two hours. so twins born forty minutes apart can, in rare cases, end up with different rising signs.

the lagna also builds the frame of ur chart. in vedic astrology the rising sign becomes ur first house, and the other eleven count on from there. move the lagna and every house in the chart moves with it.

it is usually read as ur outer layer. the version of u that walks in the room before ur sun or moon get to say anything.

what each one is actually reading

do the sums and it stops being strange. the sun sits in a sign for about a month. the moon for about two days. the rising sign for about two hours.

for all three to land on the same sign, ur birth would have to fall in the tiny window where all three line up, on the same day, in the same place. it happens. it is rare.

so most people are a mix, and the mix is the chart. sun in one sign, moon in another, lagna in a third, is not a contradiction waiting to be sorted out. it is three different readings of the same minute, each measuring something else.

how these get calculated

all three start from the same place: exactly where the sun, the moon and the eastern horizon were at ur birth minute, measured against the star zodiac using the Lahiri ayanamsa. same standard as the sun-sign explainer.

the sun and moon come straight from their position along the sky's main path. the rising sign is a completely different sum, built from local star time, how far north or south u were born, and the tilt of the earth. it never looks at the date at all. that is why the tool above will not run without both a time and a place.
