step 0: check ur birth data

the three ways a chart goes wrong before u even open it:

• a remembered birth time. ur lagna changes every two hours, so ninety minutes of error can move ur entire house frame. hospital records beat family memory every time.
• the wrong time zone. especially for births near a border or during a period when the clocks were handled differently.
• a tropical calculation. if the site is set to the western zodiac, every position will sit about 24 degrees further on, which is usually a whole sign.

how accurate ur birth time needs to be goes through exactly what each level of error costs.

step 1: work out which chart style it is

this is where most beginners get lost, and it takes about a minute to fix.

reading a north indian chart. the top centre diamond is the 1st house, always, in every chart ever drawn. the number written in it tells u which sign is there: 1 is mesha, 2 vrishabha, and on to 12 for meena. from that top diamond, houses run anticlockwise.

reading a south indian chart. the signs sit in fixed cells, running clockwise from meena in the top left corner: meena, mesha, vrishabha, mithuna across the top, then karka, simha, kanya down the right side, then tula, vrishchika, dhanu along the bottom, then kumbha, makara up the left. find the cell marked as the lagna, call it the 1st house, and count clockwise.

there is a third, the east indian or bengali style, which also fixes the signs but arranges them differently again. same information, third layout.

step 2: find the lagna and number the houses

literally write them on. on paper, on a screenshot, wherever. every single step after this one refers to house numbers, and trying to recount them each time is how people give up.

say ur lagna is mithuna. then mithuna is the 1st, karka the 2nd, simha the 3rd, kanya the 4th, and so on to vrishabha as the 12th. whole sign houses, so there is nothing to divide.

and this is the point where the chart becomes about u rather than about the sky. the same planetary positions with a different lagna describe a different life. ur lagna matters more than ur sun sign covers why in full.

step 3: find ur lagna lord

then read it as a sentence: "my life keeps routing through the affairs of house X." lagna lord in the 10th is a person whose identity keeps getting decided at work. in the 4th, at home. in the 12th, somewhere private or far away.

that one sentence explains more of most people's lives than every sun sign horoscope they will ever read.

step 4: read the moon

the moon carries the mind: mood, emotional habit, what makes u feel safe. in vedic practice it is weighted at least as heavily as the lagna, which is one of the sharper differences from western astrology.

three things to write down:

1. the moon's sign. this is ur rashi in the sense most indian families mean it, and it is what kundli matching runs on.
2. the moon's house. the department of life where ur emotional weather sits.
3. the moon's nakshatra. one of 27 star segments, and the thing that decides which dasha u were born into.

then do the chandra lagna pass: treat the moon's sign as the 1st house and renumber. anything that looks strong from both the lagna and the moon is a genuinely strong signal. anything that only shows up from one is a weaker one. that is a free second opinion built into the system.

step 5: who is sitting where

nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so empty houses are the default, not a defect. an empty 7th does not mean no marriage. it means the 7th is run entirely by its lord from wherever that lord is standing, which u will get to in step 8.

while u are here, note anything crowded. three or more grahas in one house is called a stellium in common usage, and it concentrates a lot of a life into one department.

and note anything sitting very close to the lagna degree. a graha within a few degrees of the rising point does the introducing for u before u open ur mouth.

step 6: dignity, or how comfortable each graha is

notice the pattern: exaltation and debilitation are always exactly opposite signs. and mercury is the odd one, exalted in a sign it also rules.

two more conditions to mark:

combustion. a graha too close to the sun is described as burnt, its independent voice drowned out. the orbs vary by graha and by text, broadly a few degrees to about seventeen.

retrograde. a graha appearing to move backwards. common, not a defect, and usually read as that graha's business turning inward. rahu and ketu are always retrograde, so it means nothing for them.

and do not over-weight a single debilitation. debilitated grahas are extremely common, and the tradition has a whole cancellation doctrine, neecha bhanga, precisely because of it.

step 7: aspects

the whole sign counting matters. if saturn is anywhere in ur 1st house, it aspects ur entire 10th house, regardless of degrees. western astrology would ask how tight the angle is. vedic astrology, for these purposes, does not.

step 8: the house lords

this is the step that turns a list of placements into a reading, and it is the step beginners skip.

the recipe is one sentence: "the affairs of house A get carried into house B."

so if ur 10th lord sits in ur 7th, career gets routed through partnership: business with a partner, work that is relationship-shaped, or a career shaped by a marriage. if ur 2nd lord sits in ur 9th, money and family come through belief, teaching or a father figure.

go through all twelve. it takes ten minutes and it produces more usable sentences than everything before it combined. the twelve houses covers what each one actually contains.

step 9: yogas

u already did the hard part in step 8. now just check ur list of lords for connections.

• any kendra lord sitting with any trikona lord: raj yoga.
• ur 9th lord and 10th lord connected: dharma karmadhipati yoga, the strongest of the family.
• jupiter in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from ur moon: gajakesari yoga, present in about a third of all charts.
• mars, mercury, jupiter, venus or saturn in its own or exaltation sign, in a kendra: one of the five panch mahapurusha yogas.

and keep perspective. yogas are common, most charts have several, and none of them does anything until the dasha of the grahas forming it arrives. raj yoga is a handshake between two houses covers the whole family and what actually makes one deliver.

step 10: the dasha ur in

everything up to here described capacity. this step describes schedule, and it is the difference between "ur chart says X" and "ur chart says X, and it was loudest between these years."

read ur current pair against everything u already found. if u are in the mahadasha of a graha that rules ur 10th and sits in ur 11th, that is a career-and-income period, and it will have a recognisable flavour for years. what a dasha is covers the whole cycle.

then do the retrospective check, which is the honest way to test any of this: look at which dashas were running during the parts of ur life u already know about. if the system is telling u anything, it should have something to say about the past.

step 11: what the sky is doing now

three checks are enough for a first reading:

• where is transiting saturn relative to ur moon sign. if it is in the sign before, the same sign, or the sign after, u are in sade sati.
• where is transiting jupiter, and which house of urs is it currently sitting in.
• where is the rahu ketu axis now, and which two houses of urs it is running through.

ignore the fast ones for a birth chart reading. the moon changes sign every two and a bit days and mercury moves constantly. those are day-to-day weather, not chapters.

step 12: synthesis, and the rule of three

this is the step that separates a reading from a list of placements, and it is the one nobody can do for u in a table.

an example of the rule working. suppose u want to say "this is a chart about work."

1. the lagna lord sits in the 10th. that is one.
2. saturn, the graha of labour, aspects the 10th. that is two.
3. the 10th lord is strong and sits in the 11th, the house of gains. that is three.
4. and the current mahadasha belongs to one of those grahas. now it is four, with timing attached.

that is a claim worth making. one placement on its own is a note, not a conclusion, and treating a single placement as a verdict is the most common mistake in every astrology conversation u will ever have.

the same rule works in reverse as a fraud filter. when someone tells u something dramatic about ur chart, ask which three things point there. a real practitioner will list them without hesitating.
