every astrology site in india offers a free kundli, and they are not being generous.

a birth chart is a solved computation. the planetary positions come from a standard ephemeris, the rest is arithmetic, and one more chart costs the server a rounding error.

so the chart is not the product. it is the door. here is what is on the other side of it, in the four shapes it usually takes, and what u are actually handing over on the way in.

the short version

a kundli is cheap to compute. the ephemeris is standard, the maths is settled, the marginal cost is near zero.
so free kundlis are funded elsewhere: ads, consultation upsell, remedy commission, or freemium.
what u pay with is ur birth date, exact time, place, and usually a phone number. that combination is unusually identifying.
two free kundlis disagree because of ayanamsa, house system, or a mis-resolved time zone. the sky is not in dispute.

why the chart itself is nearly free to make

Planetary positions for any moment in history are available from standard ephemeris data. Converting those into a sidereal chart is a fixed sequence of arithmetic. There is no proprietary insight and no expensive step, which is why every site can give it away.

the pipeline is short and everyone runs the same one:

convert the birth date, time and place into universal time and a set of coordinates.
look up the tropical positions of the grahas at that instant from the ephemeris.
subtract the ayanamsa to get sidereal positions.
compute the ascending degree from the location and the local sidereal time.
assign houses. in whole sign, this is trivial.
compute the vimshottari dasha from the moon's position in its nakshatra.

none of that is a trade secret. it is in textbooks, and the hard part, the ephemeris itself, is produced by astronomers and is available to everybody.

which means: if someone is charging u for the chart, they are charging u for a lookup. anything genuinely worth paying for sits downstream of step six.

the four business models

Free kundlis are funded in four ways, usually in combination. Knowing which one you are inside tells you what the site wants from you next.

none of these are illegitimate. products cost money to build and somebody has to pay for it. the third one is the only one with a structural problem, because the party diagnosing the condition also sells the cure, and that is a conflict no amount of sincerity resolves. we went through it in gemstones by planet.

what u are actually paying with

A kundli needs your exact date, time and place of birth. Most sites also ask for a phone number or email. That combination is unusually identifying, and none of it is needed twice.

think about what is in that set. an exact birth timestamp and location is close to a unique key for a person. it is the sort of detail used to verify identity elsewhere, and it does not change, ever.

and notice that a phone number is not required to compute a chart. nothing in the six steps above needs it. it is collected because it lets somebody contact u later, which tells u exactly which of the four models u are inside.

in india this is covered by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. broadly, u are entitled to be told what is being collected and why, and to ask for it to be deleted. the practical questions worth asking any app or site:

what exactly is stored, and for how long?
is it shared with third parties, and which?
is anything processed outside india?
can u delete everything, from inside the product, without emailing anyone?

a product that answers those clearly in its privacy policy has thought about it. one that does not, has not.

why two free kundlis disagree

The astronomy is identical everywhere because everyone uses the same ephemeris. Differences come from settings: the ayanamsa, the house system, and how the birth place was resolved to a time zone.

run one cross-check that costs nothing: does the moon sign match what ur family has always called ur rashi? indian households use the sidereal moon sign, so a mismatch there is a strong signal that a setting is wrong somewhere.

what u should get for free, and what is fair to charge for

Everything that is arithmetic should be free, because it costs nothing to produce. Everything that is judgement, human time or ongoing maintenance is a real cost and it is reasonable to pay for it.

that last cell is the line worth holding. paying for depth is normal. paying to undo an anxiety that was manufactured two screens earlier is not a transaction anybody should be running.

the checklist

before u type ur birth details into anything, six questions, about twenty seconds:

does it name the ayanamsa? lahiri, ideally, and visible.
can u see the degrees? not just signs. degrees, minutes, nakshatra, pada.
does it show dasha dates? if not, it is a horoscope generator.
what happens with no birth time? honest tools say the houses are unavailable.
is there a delete option? inside the product, not via email.
does the free reading end in a worry? if it does, u have found the funnel.

and one more that is not on any list: does the moon sign match what ur family calls ur rashi. that single cross-check catches more errors than the other five combined.

myths, one at a time

A paid kundli is more accurate than a free one.

The calculation is standard and cheap. Accuracy depends on the ayanamsa, the house system and ur birth data, none of which improve with price.

Free means nobody is making money from me.

It means the revenue is elsewhere. Ads, consultations, remedies or a subscription. Worth knowing which before u decide whether u mind.

If two sites disagree, one is broken.

Usually both are computing correctly with different settings. Check the ayanamsa first.

Giving a phone number is required for the chart.

Nothing in the calculation needs it. It is collected so u can be contacted later.

Birth details are not sensitive data.

An exact timestamp and location is close to a unique identifier, it never changes, and it is covered by the DPDP Act.

A kundli in hindi is calculated differently.

Language is presentation. The arithmetic is identical. Run the same checks.
