how to pick a vedic astrology app, from people who make one

we build ask tota, so treat this as a pitch with its working shown. here are the ten checks that separate a real jyotish engine from a horoscope generator, the three completely different products all calling themselves astrology apps, and the places our competitors are straightforwardly better.

first, the disclosure, because everything else is worthless without it: we make one of these. ask tota is our app. this is not a neutral review and we are not going to pretend it is.

what we can do instead is give u the criteria, in full, including the ones we do not win on. if the checks are good, u can apply them to us as easily as to anyone else, and that is the only honest version of this article.

so: ten checks, three product categories that get lumped together, and a straight list of where other apps beat us.

the short version

ask which ayanamsa it uses. if it will not say, stop there.
check whether it is genuinely sidereal. a lot of apps labelled vedic quietly serve a tropical zodiac.
there are three different products here: consultation marketplaces, computation tools, and ai companions. they are barely comparable.
see whether it handles a missing birth time honestly or silently assumes noon.
check whether u can see the numbers: degrees, house system, dasha dates. an unverifiable reading is just prose.
watch for fear plus a price. that is the single most reliable red flag in the category.

three products, one word

Almost every "best astrology app" list compares things that are not competitors. There are three distinct products: marketplaces that sell you minutes with a human astrologer, computation tools that draw charts and run calculations, and AI companions that generate readings from your chart.

the mistake is picking the wrong category and then being disappointed by a product doing exactly its job. a computation tool that refuses to tell u what anything means is not broken. a marketplace that costs money per minute is not a scam. they are different things.

ask tota is the third kind. it computes a real chart and then talks about it. if what u want is a person on a call, u want the first kind, and we will not be the answer.

the ten checks

These are ordered by how much they narrow the field. The first two eliminate most apps on their own.

which ayanamsa? lahiri is the indian standard. an app that will not tell u has either not decided or is not sidereal. this single question removes most of the list.
is it genuinely sidereal? run the ten second test in the next section. a surprising number of apps labelled vedic serve western positions.
does it name its ephemeris? swiss ephemeris is the usual answer. an app that names nothing usually has nothing to name.
can u see the degrees? every graha, to the minute, with its nakshatra and pada. if u cannot see the numbers, u cannot check anything.
which house system? whole sign is standard in vedic practice. if it is using placidus without saying so, u are looking at a western chart in sanskrit clothing.
how does it handle no birth time? the honest answer is to give u sun, moon, nakshatra and dasha and tell u the houses are unavailable. silently substituting noon is the tell.
does it show dasha dates? mahadasha and antardasha with start and end dates. timing is where vedic astrology actually lives, and an app without it is a horoscope generator.
does it sell remedies? and if so, does it earn on them. an app that diagnoses a dosha and then routes u to a gemstone it takes commission on has a conflict of interest.
what happens to ur birth data? who processes it, where, and can u delete it from inside the app. under the DPDP Act u are entitled to ask and to be told.
is the pricing legible? what is free, what is paid, and what the limits are, visible before u pay rather than after.

if u only run two of these, run one and six. the ayanamsa question tells u whether the maths is vedic. the birth time question tells u whether the app is honest when it does not know something.

the sidereal test u can run in ten seconds

Enter a birth date in the middle of August and look at the sun sign the app returns. Tropical astrology calls that Leo. Sidereal astrology calls most of August Karka. If a 15 August birthday comes back as Leo, the app is not sidereal, whatever it says on the listing.

this works because the two zodiacs have drifted about 24 degrees apart, which is most of a sign. if u were born in roughly the first three weeks of ur western sign, ur vedic sun sign is the one before it.

so anything that returns the western answer while calling itself vedic has either not implemented an ayanamsa or has left it switched off. why ur sun sign is different in vedic astrology has the full arithmetic.

a second, harder test if u want one: check whether the app's moon sign matches what ur family has always called ur rashi. indian families use the moon sign, and it is computed sidereally, so a mismatch there is a strong signal something is off.

red flags

The reliable warning signs are commerce patterns rather than astrological ones. Urgency, fear followed immediately by a price, and readings that cannot be checked.

a countdown timer on a remedy. planetary positions do not expire at midnight. sale prices do.
a dosha diagnosis followed by a purchase link. the order matters. explanation first, then price, or it is a funnel.
predictions with dates. the instruments run in months and years. an app promising a marriage month is exceeding what the technique supports. see when will i get married.
no way to see the chart. prose with no numbers behind it cannot be verified, and anything unverifiable is entertainment.
readings that never say "we do not know". a system that is always confident is not measuring anything.
no delete option. ur birth details are personal data. if u cannot remove them, ask why not.

where other apps beat us

An honest guide has to include this section or it is an advertisement. Here is where Ask Tota is genuinely not the right answer.

what we would claim, and what u can check with the ten questions above: the chart is computed sidereally on lahiri, the numbers are visible, the app is explicit about what a missing birth time costs u, and it does not sell remedies, because we do not want the conflict of interest.

that is the pitch. the criteria are above it so u can test it.

myths, one at a time

The paid app must be more accurate.

Chart calculation is cheap and standard. What u pay for is interpretation and convenience. Some of the most capable jyotish software is free.

If it says Vedic, it is sidereal.

Run the August test. A number of apps labelled Vedic return tropical positions.

All astrology apps are the same product.

Marketplaces, computation tools and AI companions solve different problems. Picking the wrong category is the most common disappointment.

A confident app is a good app.

A system that never says "we cannot know that from this data" is not measuring anything.

Free means the app is not making money from me.

It means the revenue is somewhere else. Find out where before u decide whether u mind.

Reviews on the store tell you which is best.

Store ratings measure satisfaction with the experience, not whether the ayanamsa is correct. Nobody rates an app down for the wrong zodiac.

what happens to ur birth details, whether they are shared with third parties, whether readings are processed outside india, and whether u can delete everything from inside the app. under india's DPDP Act u are entitled to ask.

it depends what u want. a human conversation, a computation tool, or an explainer that talks back are three different products. we make the third kind and we will say so plainly rather than pretend to be neutral.

where do other apps beat ask tota?

does an app need to show its calculations?

it should be able to. if u cannot see the degree of every graha, the ayanamsa and the house system, u cannot check anything it tells u, and an unverifiable reading is just prose.

what is a red flag in an astrology app?

urgency. countdown timers on remedies, warnings that a dosha will worsen, and prices that appear immediately after a frightening reading. those are commerce patterns, not astrology ones.
