mercury is the closest planet to the sun, and from where we are standing it can never get very far from it.

about 28 degrees is the limit. that is less than a sign's width, and mercury spends its entire existence inside that leash.

almost everything budha does in a chart follows from that one constraint: why it is burnt so often, why it turns up next to the sun in half the charts u will ever read, and why the tradition describes it as the graha that takes on the colour of whatever it stands beside.

the 28 degree leash

Mercury orbits inside Earth's orbit, close to the sun. From here, that means it can never appear more than about 28 degrees away from the sun in the sky. A zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide, so mercury is always in the sun's sign or one of the two either side.

this is a hard physical limit, not a tendency. u will never find a chart with mercury four signs from the sun, because such a chart cannot exist.

three consequences fall straight out of it, and they cover most of what practitioners actually notice about budha.

mercury is combust very often, because the burn radius is half its entire range.
mercury is with the sun very often, which is why budhaditya yoga is so widely claimed.
mercury never gets to act alone, which fits the tradition's description of it as adaptable and dependent on company.

the same constraint applies to venus, at about 47 degrees, which is why venus is never more than two signs from the sun either. those two are the only grahas with a leash.

what budha actually runs

Mercury carries speech, intellect, analysis, commerce, accounting, contracts, education and short travel. The clean way to hold it: budha processes. It does not decide, and it does not want. Those belong to other grahas.

the distinction matters because mercury gets loosely described as "intelligence", and that flattens it.

notice what is missing: conviction, appetite, authority. jupiter believes, rahu wants, the sun decides. mercury handles the traffic between them. it is the graha of the interface, and it reads that way in a chart.

the only graha exalted in its own sign

Mercury is exalted in Kanya, deepest at 15 degrees, and Kanya is also one of the two signs it rules. No other graha has its exaltation and its rulership in the same place.

every other graha's exaltation sits in somebody else's sign. the sun is exalted in mesha, which is mars's. the moon in vrishabha, which is venus's. mercury alone doubles up.

the tradition does not derive this mechanically, so the honest thing is to describe it rather than explain it. kanya is precision, method, sorting and usefulness. those are the things budha is best at, so the system puts its peak there.

the practical effect is that a kanya mercury is unusually strong, and a mithuna mercury, though also in its own sign, is not treated the same way. the two rulerships are not equivalent, and mooltrikona sits in kanya too, from 16 to 20 degrees, which reinforces it.

the debilitation is the mirror. meena is impressions, sympathy and blurred edges, which is the least comfortable environment for a graha built to separate things cleanly.

why mercury is burnt so often

A graha within a certain distance of the sun is described as combust, or astangata, its own voice drowned out by the sun's. For mercury the commonly used orb is about 14 degrees, about 12 when retrograde. Since mercury's total range is 28 degrees, roughly half its possible positions are inside that burn radius.

work the arithmetic and it is startling. mercury can be anywhere from 28 degrees behind the sun to 28 degrees ahead, a 56 degree window. the combust zone is 14 degrees either side, which is 28 of those 56.

so on a very rough uniform reading, about half of all charts have a combust mercury. the real figure is not uniform, because mercury spends more time near its elongation extremes than crossing the middle, but it remains extremely common.

which should immediately change how much weight the label carries. a condition present in a very large fraction of the population is a starting note, not a diagnosis. the classical reading of a combust mercury runs toward a mind that is absorbed into the person's sense of self rather than operating independently, which is a description, not a defect.

the same logic applies to plenty of other labels. we ran it on raj yoga and nadi dosha, and it keeps producing the same lesson: ask how common it is before u ask what it means.

budhaditya yoga, and why it is not rare

Budhaditya yoga is the sun and mercury together in one sign. It is described as intelligence joined to recognition. It is also one of the most common configurations in astrology, because mercury physically cannot be far from the sun.

the name is lovely: budha plus aditya, mercury plus sun. and the reading, competence that gets noticed, is a genuinely nice thing to find.

but with a 28 degree maximum separation and 30 degree signs, mercury shares a sign with the sun a very large share of the time. this is not a rare alignment. it is close to a default.

so the useful question is never "do i have budhaditya yoga". it is:

which house are they in together, since that decides what the combination is doing.
how close, because if mercury is inside the combustion orb, the same conjunction is usually read as burnt rather than blessed. those two readings sit on the same degrees.
what mercury rules for ur lagna, which decides whether it is a helpful graha for u at all.

the adaptability rule

Classical texts describe mercury as neutral and adaptable: it takes on the qualities of the graha it sits with. A benefic in good company, difficult in difficult company. This is a defining rule and it means mercury is rarely read in isolation.

this is why a generic "mercury in the 3rd house" reading is close to worthless without its company. the graha is a lens, and lenses take their character from what is behind them.

a retrograde mercury at birth

About one person in five is born with mercury retrograde, because mercury is retrograde roughly 18 percent of the year. The classical reading is that a retrograde graha gains motional strength, so it is not a weakness.

the usual description is a mind that runs inward before it runs outward. slower to answer, better on the second draft, prone to going back over things that were already settled.

and per shadbala, vakri grahas score higher on cheshta bala, the motional component. anyone telling u a natal retrograde mercury is damaged is not quoting the classical position.

myths, one at a time

Budhaditya yoga is a rare mark of genius.

Mercury physically cannot be far from the sun, so the two share a sign very often. The label is close to a default and tells u little on its own.

A combust mercury ruins the mind.

Roughly half of all charts have one, because the burn radius is half of mercury's entire possible range. It is a starting note, not a diagnosis.

Mercury is a benefic.

It is neutral and takes its character from its company. Mercury with saturn and mercury with venus are two different grahas in practice.

A debilitated mercury in meena means you are not intelligent.

It means precision is not the natural mode. It is common, cancellations apply, and plenty of very sharp people have one.
