the signs are the same twelve. same names, same order, thirty degrees each. what changes is where the counting starts, and that gap is about twenty-four degrees. which is most of a sign.

this page gives u all twelve rashis with their rulers, elements and the date ranges that actually apply. plus a calculator for ur moon sign, which is the one that matters most here.

why ur sign moved

Western astrology counts from the spring equinox. Vedic astrology counts from a fixed point among the stars. Those two starting lines have drifted about 24 degrees apart since they last matched, around 285 CE. That pushes every vedic sign roughly three weeks later than its western twin.

that is the whole story in a paragraph. everything else on this page comes out of it.

the earth wobbles on its axis like a spinning top slowing down. one full wobble takes 25,772 years.

that wobble drags the equinox backwards against the stars by about 50.29 arcseconds a year, which works out to roughly one degree every 72 years. this is called precession. it is ordinary astronomy, and Hipparchus wrote it down in the second century BCE.

western astrology pinned its zero to the equinox, so its zodiac travels along with the wobble. vedic astrology pinned its zero to the stars, so its zodiac stays put.

the two matched once, around the year 285. they have been drifting apart ever since. the gap today, called the ayanamsa, is about 24 degrees 13 minutes.

24 degrees out of a 30 degree sign is a lot. so most people born in the first stretch of their western sign are a different sign in vedic terms. someone born on 12 december who has called themselves a Sagittarius since school is a vedic Vrishchika. we did the arithmetic properly in why ur sun sign is different in Vedic astrology.

Every rashi has a sanskrit name, a ruling graha, an element and a modality. The ruling planet matters most in practice. It is the one a vedic astrologer looks at when reading anything about that sign, or the house sitting on it.

two warnings about that date column, because people misuse it.

first, these are sun sign dates, and in this system ur sun sign is the least important of ur three main placements.

second, they shift by a day either way depending on the year, and they creep very slowly over centuries as the ayanamsa grows. use them as a guide, and calculate properly for anything that matters.

each sign change has its own name in the indian calendar. the sun entering Makara is Makar Sankranti, which is why that festival lands in mid january every year instead of wandering like the moon festivals do. we explained why those wander in why Hindu festival dates change every year.

the twelve, one at a time

Each rashi is read through its ruling graha, its element and its modality. The ruler does most of the work: read a Mesha placement through Mars, a Tula placement through Venus. The element sets the temperament, and the modality sets how it deals with change.

Mesha (Aries), ruled by Mars

fire, movable. the first sign, and it acts like it. starting things, impatience, doing rather than discussing. the sun is exalted here, which is the tradition saying authority works cleanly in a sign built for going first.

Vrishabha (Taurus), ruled by Venus

earth, fixed. stability, taste, patience, and a strong preference for not being rushed. the moon is exalted here, which fits: emotional life is steadiest in a sign that likes things to stay where they are put.

Mithuna (Gemini), ruled by Mercury

air, dual. speech, curiosity, quick switching, and a knack for holding two ideas at the same time. dual signs deal with change by bending rather than pushing back, which reads as flexible on a good day and unanchored on a bad one.

Karka (Cancer), ruled by the Moon

water, movable. memory, protection, home, and a very long memory for how things felt. Jupiter is exalted here. the moon ruling it and Jupiter exalted in it makes this the most reliably caring sign in the system.

Simha (Leo), ruled by the Sun

fire, fixed. authority, warmth, being seen, and a real need to be watched doing the thing. it is the only sign whose ruler rules nothing else. the tradition thinks that matters: the sun has one house and holds it completely.

Kanya (Virgo), ruled by Mercury

earth, dual. analysis, service, precision, and very little patience for sloppy work. Mercury both rules this sign and is exalted in it. no other graha has that double claim anywhere, which is why Kanya placements read as unusually sharp.

Tula (Libra), ruled by Venus

air, movable. balance, negotiation, beauty, and real discomfort when an argument is left hanging. Saturn is exalted here, which surprises people until u remember that Saturn's job is fairness, applied the same way every time.

Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars

water, fixed. depth, secrecy, staying power, and an appetite for whatever is underneath. the moon is debilitated here, which the tradition reads as feelings running deep and uncomfortable, not as feelings going wrong.

Dhanu (Sagittarius), ruled by Jupiter

fire, dual. belief, teaching, travel, big questions, and a habit of talking in principles. this is Jupiter's own sign, so the generous, moral, slightly preachy note runs at full volume.

Makara (Capricorn), ruled by Saturn

earth, movable. structure, ambition, patience, and no problem with plans that take years. Mars is exalted here, which is the tradition pairing raw drive with the one sign that will make it wait.

Kumbha (Aquarius), ruled by Saturn

air, fixed. systems, groups, standing back, and a real interest in how things ought to be organised. Saturn's other sign, and the more thoughtful of the two.

Meena (Pisces), ruled by Jupiter

water, dual. things dissolving, empathy, imagination, and boundaries that leak. Venus is exalted here, which reads as love with no conditions attached, for better and for worse.

why cusp signs do not exist here

In vedic astrology every degree belongs to exactly one sign. There is no shared border. If the sun is at 29 degrees 59 minutes of Mesha, it is in Mesha, completely, with no Vrishabha in it at all. The cusp idea comes from western pop astrology and has no vedic version.

people born near a date boundary often say they are a cusp sign, half one and half the next. it is a nice idea and it is not part of this system.

the reason is structural. vedic astrology runs on exact degrees, and it keeps slicing: each sign into 30 degrees, the zodiac into 27 nakshatras, each nakshatra into four padas, each sign again into nine navamsa parts.

a system that cuts that finely cannot also have blurry edges. the two ideas cannot both be true.

what is true, and what the cusp idea is probably reaching for, is that near a boundary ur birth time matters more. if the sun was at 29 degrees 50 minutes when u were born, then a time written down ten minutes off could genuinely move u into the next sign.

that is a problem with the data, not a blended personality.

the honest thing to do near an edge is to say so. our calculators flag it when a result lands close to one, instead of quietly picking. a confident wrong answer is worse than an uncertain right one.

which sign is actually urs

U have at least three, and they are usually different. Ur moon sign is ur rashi, and that is what indian practice means by ur sign. Ur rising sign builds the frame of the whole chart. Ur sun sign matters least here, which is the exact opposite of western pop astrology.

if ur horoscope has ever felt like it was describing a completely different person, this table is usually why. u were reading the placement that changes once a month, shared with about one twelfth of everyone alive, when the tradition would have pointed u at the one that changes every two hours.

that is also why indian newspapers print horoscopes by moon sign. it is not a different habit for the sake of it. it is a different answer to the question of which placement is really personal. sun sign vs moon sign vs rising sign goes through all three properly.

sign compatibility, and why it is the weakest tool here

Vedic astrology does not mainly match people by zodiac sign. It matches birth nakshatras, using the ashtakoota system, which scores eight checks out of 36. Sign-to-sign compatibility is rough shorthand at best, and it is not what a traditional matchmaker uses.

sign compatibility charts are everywhere. in vedic terms they are the shallowest possible version of the question.

what the tradition actually uses is ashtakoota guna milan: eight tests run on the two birth nakshatras, weighted unevenly, adding up to 36 points.

one of those tests, Nadi, is worth 8 points on its own. another, Bhakoot, is worth 7 and does look at the two moon signs. so sign compatibility is in there. it is just one slice of the pie, not the pie.

which means two people whose sun signs are supposedly wrong for each other can score well, and two whose sun signs look perfect can score badly. if a compatibility answer came out of two sun signs alone, it did not use the vedic method at all. we pulled the whole system apart in how ashtakoota scores compatibility out of 36.

what gets repeated, and what is actually true

My zodiac sign changed, so one of the two systems is wrong.

Both systems agree exactly where the sun was. They disagree about what to call that spot, because they count from different starting lines. It is an argument about names, not about facts.

NASA changed the zodiac and added Ophiuchus.

NASA wrote a schools explainer about the difference between constellations and zodiac signs. It changed nothing. Astrology has used twelve equal 30 degree slices for over two thousand years, and the constellations were never equal in size.

I am a cusp sign, so I am a bit of both.

Not in this system. Every degree belongs to one sign. What is true is that near an edge ur birth time has to be accurate, because ten minutes can move the answer.

My rashi is my sun sign.

In India, rashi almost always means the moon sign. This one mix-up is behind a lot of people deciding vedic astrology does not work for them.

Fire signs and water signs cannot get along.

Matching by element is broad, unreliable shorthand, and it is not what vedic matchmaking uses. Ashtakoota scores eight separate checks from the two birth nakshatras.

mistakes worth not making

using western dates with vedic meanings. the ranges are about three weeks apart. mix them and u get the wrong sign, then confident readings of the wrong sign.
reading ur sun sign and stopping there. in this system it is the least personal of ur three main placements.
assuming the sanskrit names are simple translations. they line up, but the meanings lean differently. Vrishchika is not a copy of the western Scorpio.
trusting a date table near an edge. sign entry dates move a day either way by year. if u were born close to one, calculate instead of looking up.
judging compatibility on sun signs. the vedic method reads nakshatras, not signs, and weights eight checks unevenly.

the date ranges here are worked out on the Lahiri ayanamsa. they move a day either side depending on the year, and creep very slowly over centuries as the ayanamsa grows. we call them approximate because that is what they are.

the wobble figures, a 25,772 year cycle at about 50.29 arcseconds a year, are standard astronomy and have nothing to do with astrology. the Lahiri ayanamsa was set by India's Calendar Reform Committee in 1955 under Meghnad Saha, and it is still the government standard.

the rulers, exaltations, elements and modalities follow Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Brihat Jataka. the character sketches for each sign are traditional interpretation, not measurement, and we would rather label that plainly than blur it into the arithmetic.
