a planet's sign tells u its manner. its house tells u its address.

Saturn in Makara describes a temperament. Saturn in the 7th house describes ur marriage. one of those is a lot more useful when ur trying to understand ur own life.

this post walks through all twelve, with a calculator so u can see where ur own grahas actually landed.

what a house actually is

A house is one twelfth of the sky as it looked from ur birthplace, measured from the eastern horizon. Whichever sign was rising becomes ur 1st house, and the next eleven signs become houses 2 to 12 in order. Each one looks after a different department of ur life.

signs cut up the zodiac. houses cut up ur own local sky. that is the difference, and it is why houses need ur birth time and place while signs mostly do not.

the zodiac wheel is fixed and shared. everyone born on the same day has the sun in the same sign.

the house wheel is yours, and it spins once every twenty-four hours as the earth turns. ur birth minute freezes that spin at one particular angle, and that angle is ur lagna.

which is why two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, share nearly every planetary sign and almost no house placements. same sky, different rooms.

whole sign houses, and why the argument does not apply here

With whole sign houses, the whole rising sign is ur 1st house, the whole next sign is ur 2nd, and so on round. A planet's house is decided by its sign and nothing else. Western astrology's long argument about which house system to use mostly does not reach vedic practice at all.

western astrology has a real, unfinished fight about how to cut up the houses, because most of its systems divide the sky unevenly. that gives u houses of different sizes and planets sitting right on the border.

vedic practice steps around the whole argument. one sign, one house, thirty degrees each, no exceptions. if ur rising sign is Kumbha, all of Kumbha is ur 1st house, even if the exact rising point lands at 29 degrees. and all of Meena is ur 2nd.

the benefit is that a planet can never be ambiguous about which house it is in.

the cost is that a planet at 29 degrees of ur 1st house is physically very close to ur 2nd, while still being firmly counted in the 1st. some astrologers deal with that using a second chart called bhava chalit. most read the whole sign chart as the main one and use chalit as a check.

the house families: kendra, trikona, dusthana

The houses group into families that share a character. Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) hold structure and visibility. Trikonas (1, 5, 9) hold luck and purpose. Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) hold friction and loss. Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) get better with time and effort.

the 1st house turning up in both the kendra and trikona lists is not a filing mistake. it is the only house that is both, which is why the tradition calls it the strongest point in a chart.

and a word on the dusthanas, because they get sold as disaster zones.

the 6th is also the house of competitive work, service, and the ability to beat a problem. the 8th is the house of research, inheritance and real change. the 12th is the house of foreign countries, sleep, retreat and letting go.

plenty of successful lives have planets in all three. plenty of unremarkable ones have none.

all twelve houses, one at a time

Each house looks after a cluster of related topics. The 1st is ur body and self. The 2nd is money and speech. The 3rd is courage and siblings. The 4th is home and mother. The 5th is creativity and children. The 6th is work and health. The 7th is marriage. The 8th is upheaval. The 9th is luck and belief. The 10th is career. The 11th is income. The 12th is letting go.

1st house: tanu bhava

ur body, ur temperament, the way u walk into a room. it is the starting point for the whole chart, so its condition colours everything else.

planets here are the most visible ones in ur life, because they are sitting on ur own front door. the planet ruling this house is ur lagna lord, the closest thing ur chart has to a main character.

2nd house: dhana bhava

money u earn and keep, the family u came from, food, and speech. the speech part surprises people until u notice this house also covers the face and mouth.

a strong 2nd usually reads as being good at getting hold of things, rather than inheriting them. inheritance belongs to the 4th and 8th.

3rd house: sahaja bhava

courage, getting started, younger siblings, short journeys, hands and talking. this is the house of ur own effort, as opposed to luck.

writers, salespeople and anyone who gets there by refusing to stop usually have something happening here. it is also an upachaya, so it gets stronger as u get older.

4th house: bandhu bhava

home, ur mother, land and vehicles, and how u feel when nothing much is happening. it sits at the very bottom of the chart, which is the tradition being literal. this is the floor.

schooling up to a point lives here too, as does the feeling of having somewhere to go back to.

5th house: putra bhava

creativity, romance, children, gambling, and the sort of learning u do because u want to. it is a trikona, so it carries good luck.

and that mix of children, romance and gambling is not random. all three are things u send out into the world without any control over how they come back.

6th house: ari bhava

daily work, routine, health, debt, lawsuits and enemies. the least glamorous house in the chart and one of the most useful. it is where u solve problems for a living.

a busy 6th turns up in people who are unusually good at grinding through obstacles, which is exactly why it is also an upachaya.

7th house: yuvati bhava

marriage, business partners, and open opposition. anybody u sit across a table from.

it sits exactly opposite the 1st house, which is the tradition making a point. ur partner is the counterweight to u. this is the house every matchmaking conversation is really about.

8th house: randhra bhava

upheaval, secrets, inheritance, other people's money, research, and things that end so that something else can begin.

it has the worst reputation and the most interesting contents. surgeons, investigators, researchers and psychologists often have something going on here.

it also runs joint finances, insurance, and everything u receive rather than earn.

9th house: dharma bhava

luck, belief, teachers, higher study, long journeys, and ur father. classically the luckiest house in the chart.

it is where ur sense of what is worth doing comes from. and it sits opposite the 3rd, which is where ur effort comes from. belief on one side, effort on the other.

10th house: karma bhava

career, public reputation, and whatever ur known for. the highest point of the chart, which is literal again. this is what people can see from far away.

keep it separate from the 6th, which is the work itself. the 10th is what u get for doing it.

11th house: labha bhava

income, gains, networks, older siblings, and the things u want. different from the 2nd, which is money u already hold.

the 11th is money that arrives, usually through other people. it is the house of the group, the circle, and whatever ambition is pulling u forward.

12th house: vyaya bhava

spending, sleep, other countries, being alone, hospitals, spiritual practice and letting go. the most misread house in the whole chart.

yes, it covers loss. but loss here means release, including releasing things that badly needed releasing.

it is also the standard house for living abroad, which is why so many people who move overseas have something sitting here.

why empty houses are normal and mean nothing

Nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has empty ones. Five to seven is normal. Read an empty house through its ruler: find the planet that rules the sign on that house, then see where it sits and how it is doing.

this causes more needless worry than anything else we see. someone opens their chart, sees nothing in the 7th, and decides they will never get married.

the arithmetic settles it on its own. nine grahas, twelve houses. and grahas bunch up rather than spreading out, so several often share one house, which leaves even more houses empty. a chart with only three empty houses is unusual, not lucky.

reading an empty house is simple:

find the sign sitting on that house.
find that sign's ruling planet. that is the house lord.
find where that planet sits, what shape it is in, and what else is touching it.

so an empty 7th house in Simha means ur 7th lord is the Sun. if that Sun is strong and well placed, ur 7th house is being looked after from wherever it stands.

the house is not really empty. its manager is just working from another office.

how to actually read a house

To read any house, check four things in order. Which sign is on it. Which planets are sitting in it. Where its ruler went. And which planets are looking at it. A conclusion drawn from just one of those four is a guess in a good suit.

the sign on the house. this sets the manner. a 10th house in Vrishchika behaves nothing like a 10th house in Tula.
who is standing in it. planets inside a house act on it directly and loudly. more than one, and they start affecting each other.
the ruler, and where it went. often more important than the occupants, and almost always more important than beginners expect. a house with a strong ruler is a house being managed well.
who is looking at it. in vedic astrology every graha looks at the house directly opposite it. Mars also looks at the 4th and 8th from itself, Jupiter at the 5th and 9th, Saturn at the 3rd and 10th. these are whole-house looks, not measured in degrees, which is another difference from western practice.

that fourth point catches everyone out. every planet in ur 1st house is looking straight at ur 7th, always, by definition. so a crowded 1st house gives u a busy 7th whether or not anything is standing in it.

what gets repeated about houses, and what is actually the case

An empty 7th house means I will not get married.

Most charts have five to seven empty houses, and the 7th is often one of them. U read the house through its ruler, which is sitting somewhere else doing its job.

The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are bad and planets there are wasted.

They are difficult, not wasted. The 6th produces people who are very good at solving problems. The 8th produces researchers and investigators. The 12th is the usual house for living abroad and for real spiritual practice.

A planet in its own sign in any house is automatically good.

A planet's condition and the house it runs are two separate things. A comfortable planet in charge of a difficult house is a mixed picture, and reading either one alone gives u half a sentence.

Houses are the same in Vedic and western astrology.

The topics overlap a lot, but the way the sky gets cut up usually does not. Vedic practice uses whole sign houses. Most western practice cuts the sky into houses of unequal size.

A crowded house means that area of life dominates everything.

It means that area is busy and complicated, which is not the same as dominant. A crowded house usually reads as several things pulling in different directions, not one loud success.

mistakes worth not making

counting houses from ur sun sign. houses are counted from ur rising sign. counting from the moon is a real second technique. counting from the sun is a western import that does not belong in a vedic reading.
ignoring the house ruler. whoever is standing in a house is easy to see. the ruler is what holds it up. reading only occupants is like judging a company by whoever is in the lobby.
forgetting who is looking at it. a house with nothing in it can still be under heavy pressure from a planet staring at it from across the chart.
treating the 8th and 12th as verdicts. they are the two most misread houses in the system, and the two used most often to frighten people.
mixing up the 6th and the 10th. the 6th is the work u do. the 10th is what ur known for. plenty of people have a strong 6th and a quiet 10th, which reads as being very good at ur job and nobody noticing.
