ur kundli is a diagram, not a prophecy

twelve boxes, nine grahas, one minute of one day. here is what each part of a kundli is, why the north and south indian ones look nothing like each other, and how to read yours in the order that actually works.

someone hands u a kundli and it looks like homework drawn by an architect in a hurry. boxes, numbers, two-letter codes, and nothing telling u what any of it means.

there is a key. a kundli is a drawing of the sky above ur birthplace at the minute u were born, squashed flat into twelve boxes.

once u know which box is which, and what the shorthand says, u can read the shape of any chart in about ninety seconds. this post gives u that, plus a calculator that draws ur own so u have something real to practise on.

the short version

a kundli is ur Vedic birth chart. same thing as a janam kundali, janampatri, or natal chart.
it needs three things and will not work properly without all three: ur birth date, birth time and birth place.
the twelve boxes are houses, not signs. house 1 starts at ur rising sign and the rest follow round in order.
north indian charts keep the houses in fixed spots and move the signs. south indian charts keep the signs fixed and move the houses. same data, two drawings.
read it in this order: rising sign, its ruler, then ur moon and nakshatra, then everything else. never backwards.
the diagram is arithmetic. what it says about u is interpretation. two different kinds of claim, worth keeping apart.

what a kundli actually is

A kundli is a flat map of the sky as it looked from ur birthplace at the minute u were born. It shows where the nine grahas stood against the star zodiac, sorted into twelve houses, counted from whichever sign was rising on the eastern horizon.

strip off the decoration and a kundli is nine numbers, each between 0 and 360 degrees, plus one more for the horizon. everything else on the page is a way of drawing those ten numbers so a person can hold them in their head.

the word comes from kundala, sanskrit for a coil or ring, which is the round sky it flattens out. it is the same object a western astrologer calls a natal chart, counted from a different zero and drawn in a different shape.

a kundli is not a fortune. it never updates. it is fixed at the minute u were born and stays that way forever, which is exactly why the tradition builds all its timing on top with dashas and transits, rather than inside it.

the three things it needs, and why

A kundli needs ur birth date, birth time and birth place. The date pins the sun, and roughly the moon. The time pins the moon exactly, and the rising sign completely. The place pins ur horizon, because the sign rising in Kochi at 6am is not the one rising in Delhi at 6am.

astrologers nag about birth time for a reason, and it is not ceremony. without it, the whole grid of houses cannot be placed at all. and the houses are where the specific answers live.

a chart with no birth time can still give u ur moon sign, ur nakshatra and ur dasha sequence, which is genuinely a lot. it just cannot tell u which house anything is in.

if ur time is missing or shaky, say so out loud instead of guessing. a guessed time gives u a chart that is precisely and confidently wrong, and every conclusion built on it carries that error forward. how accurate does ur birth time need to be works out the tolerances placement by placement.

north indian vs south indian: same chart, two drawings

North indian kundlis keep the twelve houses in fixed spots on the page and write the sign number inside each box. South indian kundlis keep the twelve signs in fixed spots and mark which box is the rising sign. The data underneath is identical. Only the drawing changes.

this trips up more beginners than anything else in the subject, because the two charts look like completely different documents.

north indian style

a square turned on its point, cut into diamonds. the houses never move. the diamond at the top centre is always house 1, and u count anticlockwise from there.

what changes from chart to chart is the sign number written inside each box, 1 for Mesha through to 12 for Meena. so the shape tells u the house, and the number tells u the sign.

south indian style

a four-by-four square with the middle punched out. here the signs never move. Mesha is always in the same spot, and every south indian chart in the world has Meena in the same corner.

the rising sign gets marked, usually with a diagonal line, and u count the houses clockwise from there.

east indian or bengali style

a third layout, again a square, drawn with diagonals. less common outside Bengal, Odisha and Assam, and read on the same principle.

none of the three is more accurate than the others. if two astrologers give u different readings, it is never because one drew a diamond and one drew a square.

how to read a kundli, in order

Read a kundli in this order. First the rising sign. Then the planet that rules it, and where that planet sits. Then the moon and its nakshatra. Then which houses have planets in them. Then dignity and combustion. And last of all, the yogas and doshas. Any other order gives u confident nonsense.

most bad chart reading is not a knowledge problem. it is an order problem. people start at the dramatic end and work backwards.

find ur rising sign. it decides which sign goes in which house, so it decides everything after it. get it an hour wrong and ur reading somebody else's chart.
find the planet that rules it, and where it went. that planet is the closest thing ur chart has to a main character, and its house is the most useful fact after the rising sign itself.
find the moon, its sign and its nakshatra. in this system the moon is the mind, and its nakshatra sets ur whole dasha sequence. in India, ur moon sign is ur rashi, the one people actually mean.
see which houses have planets in them. nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so five or six empty ones is normal and means nothing bad. read an empty house through its ruler.
check each planet's condition. is it in its own sign, exalted, debilitated, combust, retrograde? that is a condition, not a verdict. a debilitated planet usually means effort, not failure.
only now look at yogas and doshas. and read two sources on any dosha before u believe a frightening version of it.

read in that order, a chart is boring for four steps and then suddenly specific. read backwards, it is exciting immediately and usually wrong.

the abbreviations, decoded

Kundlis use two-letter codes for the grahas, often with a note about their condition next to them. Su is Sun, Mo is Moon, Ma is Mars, Me is Mercury, Ju is Jupiter, Ve is Venus, Sa is Saturn, Ra is Rahu, Ke is Ketu. An R beside a planet means retrograde.

in a north indian chart, the numbers are signs. Mesha is 1, all the way round to Meena at 12. a number written next to a planet is usually its degree inside that sign.

(R) means retrograde. some software marks combustion with a (C). Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde anyway, so the mark often gets left off them.

why one chart is not enough: divisional charts

The main chart, called the rashi or D1, is the body of any reading. Vedic astrology also builds side charts, called vargas, by cutting each sign into smaller pieces. The two u will meet most are the D9, used for marriage and inner strength, and the D10, used for career.

these side charts are one of the things that make jyotish structurally different from western practice.

u take the same nine positions, slice each 30 degree sign into smaller pieces, then build a brand new chart from whichever piece each planet landed in.

the catch is precision. the D9 cuts each sign into pieces of 3 degrees 20 minutes, so a four minute error in ur birth time can push a planet into a different box.

that is the real reason birth time matters more here than in western astrology, where nothing gets sliced that finely.

an old rule worth keeping: if a promise shows up in the main chart and falls apart in the D9, treat it as unconfirmed. side charts check the main chart. they do not replace it.

kundli matching is a different job

Kundli matching, or guna milan, compares two birth nakshatras across eight checks and scores the pair out of 36. It is a quick screen, not a reading of either chart. A high score does not describe either person, and a low one is a reason to look closer, not a verdict.

worth pulling apart, because people use the same phrase for both things. reading a kundli means interpreting one person's chart. matching kundlis means running two charts through the ashtakoota system to get a number out of 36.

the eight checks are weighted unevenly, and the heaviest one, Nadi, carries 8 of the 36 on its own. families usually treat 18 as the pass mark, which is a habit rather than anything the classical texts set. we pulled the whole scoring apart in how ashtakoota actually scores compatibility out of 36.

one thing to know before anyone quotes a score at u. guna milan looks at the two moons and their nakshatras. that is all.

it never looks at ur 7th house, ur Venus, ur Mars, or either person's dasha. it is a fast screen built for sorting through a lot of introductions, and treating its number as the final word asks it to do a job it was never built for.

what gets repeated, and what is actually true

A kundli predicts what will happen in my life.

It records where nine things were at one moment. Prediction is something a person adds on top, using dashas and transits. The diagram itself forecasts nothing.

A north Indian chart and a south Indian chart can give different results.

They cannot. They are two ways of drawing identical data. If two readings differ, it is the astrologer, the birth time, or the ayanamsa. Never the layout.

Empty houses in my kundli mean those parts of life are blank.

Nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so most charts have five to seven empty ones. An empty house is read through its ruling planet, which is sitting somewhere else doing the work.

A kundli can be generated accurately from just my date of birth.

U can get ur sun sign and a rough moon sign that way. U cannot get ur rising sign. And with no rising sign there are no houses, which means no career house, no marriage house, nothing specific at all.

If two people are born the same minute in the same city they will live the same life.

Their charts will be all but identical. Their lives will not be. That is the strongest argument there is against reading a chart as a script rather than a pattern.

mistakes worth not making

rounding ur birth time to the nearest half hour. ur rising sign moves about a degree every four minutes. rounding can shift the entire house grid.
using a chart built on a different ayanamsa without noticing. Lahiri, Raman and Krishnamurti sit a degree or two apart, which is enough to move a planet near a sign edge.
swapping between counting houses from ur moon and from ur rising sign. both are real techniques, but they answer different questions, and mixing them mid-sentence gives u mush.
reading an exalted planet as automatically good. dignity describes conditions, not outcomes, and a comfortable planet ruling difficult houses is a more complicated story.
skipping straight to the doshas. almost every chart has something in it that can be named alarmingly. start with the structure.

the receipt

the calculator works out the sun using Meeus geometry, the moon from a short lunar series accurate to a few tenths of a degree, and Mars through Saturn from JPL Keplerian elements good for roughly 1800 to 2050.

the rising sign comes from local star time, ur birth latitude and the tilt of the earth. we checked it against a known test: at sunrise, the rising point has to equal the sun's position. we ran that at five latitudes in both hemispheres and it agreed to within 0.12 degrees.

houses are whole sign, following Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. the ayanamsa is Lahiri. retrograde motion comes out of the geometry rather than a lookup table, and combustion uses the standard vedic distances.

near a sign edge, a short lunar series can land on the wrong side. the tool tells u when that happens instead of quietly picking.

is my kundli the same as my western natal chart?
