what the 10th house actually covers

The 10th house, karma bhava, covers career, public reputation, and what people know u for. It sits at the very top of the chart, which is the tradition being literal about it: this is the part of ur life visible from far away. It is not the same as the work u actually do each day.

the 10th and the 6th get mashed together constantly. keeping them apart makes a career reading much sharper.

the 6th house is the work itself. the routine, the tasks, the daily grind, the problems u solve. it also covers health and debt, which tells u what kind of drawer the tradition filed it in.
the 10th house is what u get for doing it. the title, the reputation, the recognition, whatever people say about u when ur not in the room.

plenty of people have a strong 6th and a quiet 10th. that reads as being very good at ur job and nobody noticing. plenty have the reverse, where the fame runs ahead of the work. neither one is a judgment. they are just different shapes.

the 10th is also a kendra, one of the four corner houses that carry structural weight. and it is an upachaya, one of the houses that improve with age and effort.

put those two together and the tradition is saying something specific. a career is built, not handed to u, and it gets better the longer u work at it.

the 10th lord matters more than the 10th house

The planet ruling the sign on ur 10th house is called the 10th lord. Where it sits, what shape it is in, and what is looking at it will usually tell u more about ur career than whatever planets happen to be standing in the 10th itself.

this one technique separates a real reading from a horoscope. whoever is standing in the house is easy to see. the ruler is what actually holds it up.

so if ur 10th lord landed in ur 9th house, ur working life runs through teaching, belief, publishing, law or long journeys. in ur 12th, it runs through other countries, quiet rooms, big institutions and work done out of sight. in ur 7th, it runs through partners, clients and dealing with people one at a time.

the four houses that decide a career

Read career across four houses. The 10th gives standing and profession. The 6th gives the daily work. The 2nd gives earnings and what u have put away. The 11th gives gains, networks and what comes in. Read any one on its own and u get half an answer.

these four are sometimes called the artha houses. artha means material purpose. the formal set is 2, 6 and 10, and most practice adds the 11th for gains.

a few patterns worth knowing:

a strong 10th with a weak 2nd is respect without savings. work everyone admires that does not pay what it should.
a strong 11th with a weak 10th is money without a name. income arriving through who u know rather than what ur known for.
a strong 6th with a weak 10th is the person who holds the place together and never gets promoted.
the 3rd and 7th decide the job-versus-business question. the 3rd is ur own drive and the 7th is partners and the public. activity there pushes u towards working for urself.

an empty 10th house means nothing

Nine grahas cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has five to seven empty ones. An empty 10th house does not mean no career. It means u read the house through its ruler, which is somewhere else in the chart doing exactly the same job.

this comes up constantly and worries people for no reason. someone opens a chart, sees nothing in the 10th, and decides their career is blank.

the arithmetic settles it. nine grahas, twelve houses, and grahas bunch up rather than spreading out. most charts have five to seven empty houses. a chart with only three empty houses is unusual, not lucky.

the method for an empty house is the same as for any other. find the sign, find its ruler, find where the ruler went. the manager is not missing, they are working from a different office.

an empty 10th with a strong, well-placed ruler is a better career signature than a crowded 10th full of struggling planets.

the D10, the second opinion on career

The dashamsha, or D10, is a second chart. U cut each 30 degree sign into ten pieces of 3 degrees, see which piece each planet lands in, and build a whole new chart from that. It is the traditional cross-check on career.

these side charts are one of the things vedic astrology has that western astrology really does not, and career gets one of its own.

the rule of thumb astrologers use is simple. the main chart shows the promise. the side chart shows whether it holds.

if a career sign is strong in ur main chart and falls apart in the D10, it is treated as unconfirmed. strong in both, and that counts as real.

there is a cost, and we will be honest about it. each D10 slice is only 3 degrees wide. the moon crosses 3 degrees in about five and a half hours. ur rising sign crosses it in about twelve minutes.

so a birth time fifteen minutes off can move ur entire D10. that is exactly why vedic astrologers nag about birth time.

it is also why there is no D10 calculator on this page. at that resolution, a tool that does not know how accurate ur birth time is would be inventing precision.

timing: dashas decide when, not just what

The chart shows direction. The dasha shows when. If ur running the period of a planet connected to ur 10th house or its ruler, that is when the tradition expects career movement. Underneath, almost every career question in vedic astrology is a timing question.

this is where a vedic career reading does something a western one cannot, and it is the part people find most useful.

vimshottari dasha splits 120 years between the nine grahas. each gets a fixed number of years, in an order set by ur birth nakshatra. whichever one is running now is shaping the chapter ur in.

so the career question gets specific. is the planet running ur current period connected to ur 10th house?

if it rules the 10th, sits in it, or looks at it, the tradition expects career to be live during that stretch. if it has no link to ur career houses at all, that period is expected to be about something else entirely, however ambitious u happen to feel.

what a chart cannot tell u about ur career

A birth chart cannot name a job title, guess a salary, or tell u whether u will enjoy the work. The classical texts were written before nearly every modern profession existed, so every specific job list u see is somebody's modern guess, whether or not they say so.

worth stating plainly, because career content in this corner of the internet promises far too much.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra does not contain the words software, marketing or logistics. it describes kinds of activity: work with the hands, work with words, work with authority, work with fire, work with the earth.

every modern job list is someone carrying those categories forward, and sensible people carry them forward differently.

so a chart can reasonably point at:

a general field, or the kind of work that suits u
a working style, and whether u do better employed or on ur own
how visible ur work is likely to be
the periods when career change is expected to be live

and it cannot tell u:

a specific job title
an income figure
whether a particular company is right
whether the work will mean anything to u, which is a question about u and not about Mars

anyone handing u a job title from a chart is doing creative writing with real ingredients. it might be good creative writing. it is not what the method supports.

what gets repeated, and what is actually true

An empty 10th house means I will not have a career.

The chart can tell me which job offer to take.

It can tell u whether this is a period that favours change, and what kind of work suits u. Choosing between two specific offers needs information the chart simply does not hold.
