what vedic astrology actually is, minus the mystique
nine planets, twelve houses, twenty-seven star slices, and one measurement that makes the whole thing different from the horoscope in a magazine. here is the entire system, in the order that makes it make sense.
most explanations of vedic astrology start with a mood. incense, sanskrit, something about ancient wisdom. three paragraphs in and u still do not know what is being measured or how.
so here is the other version.
vedic astrology, properly called jyotish, reads where nine things in the sky were sitting against the stars, at one exact minute, from one exact place on earth. that is the measurement. everything else in the system is built on top of it.
this post walks through the whole thing in the order that makes it click, and says plainly which parts are astronomy and which parts are tradition.
the short version
- Vedic astrology, or jyotish, is the astrological tradition of the Indian subcontinent. it is calculated, not intuited.
- it counts from the stars. western astrology counts from the spring equinox. the two starting lines have drifted about 24 degrees apart, which is why ur vedic sun sign is usually one behind the one u know.
- it reads nine grahas, not ten planets. no Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. instead it adds Rahu and Ketu, the two spots where the moon's path crosses the sun's.
- ur chart is split into twelve houses, counted from ur rising sign. the sky is also cut into twenty-seven nakshatras, and that finer grid is what dasha timing and matchmaking actually run on.
- it times things with dashas, fixed turns each planet gets across 120 years. not daily sun-sign horoscopes.
- the astronomy can be checked to the arcminute. the meaning is a tradition, not a tested science. anyone who tells u different is selling something.

so what is it, in one paragraph
Vedic astrology is the astrology of the Indian subcontinent, called jyotish in sanskrit. It maps where nine sky objects sat against the stars at the exact minute and place u were born, then reads that map through twelve houses of life, twenty-seven star slices, and a fixed run of planetary periods called dashas.
the word to hold on to there is map.
a kundli is not a scroll of prophecy. it is a diagram of where things were, drawn from ephemeris tables, the same ones an observatory uses. give two astrologers the same birth details and u get the same diagram. what they say about it is where they part ways, and that is the honest edge of the subject.
jyotish is also one of the six vedangas, the limbs of vedic learning. its first job was practical: work out when the seasons turn, when to plant, when a ritual should happen.
the fortune-telling, personality-reading version most people mean today came later, and grew a lot after greek astrology reached India around the second century CE. both things are true at the same time, and the tradition is more interesting once u know that.
the one measurement that makes it different
Vedic astrology counts from the fixed stars. Western astrology counts from the spring equinox. Because the earth wobbles, those two starting lines have drifted about 24 degrees apart over 1,700 years, which usually moves ur sun sign back one place.
every zodiac needs a zero point, somewhere to start counting from. the two traditions picked different ones, and everything else follows from that.
western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the spring equinox. 0 degrees Aries is defined as wherever the sun is on the first day of northern spring, whatever stars happen to be behind it.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which starts from a fixed point among the stars. 0 degrees Mesha stays anchored to the actual constellation, not the calendar.
those two zeros used to be in the same place, around the year 285. they are not any more, because the earth's axis wobbles like a spinning top slowing down. one full wobble takes 25,772 years.
this is called precession of the equinoxes, and it is ordinary astronomy, not an astrology claim. Hipparchus wrote it down in the second century BCE. it slides the equinox against the stars by about 50.29 arcseconds a year, which comes to roughly one degree every 72 years.
the gap between the two zero points is the ayanamsa. in 2026 it is about 24 degrees 13 minutes on the Lahiri value, set by the Indian government's calendar committee in 1955, and the one Ask Tota uses everywhere.
24 degrees is most of a 30 degree sign. so if u were born in roughly the first three weeks of ur western sign, ur vedic sun sign is the one before it. a western Leo born on 10 august is a vedic Karka.
this is not an argument about the sky. both systems agree exactly where the sun was. they disagree about what to call that spot. we took it apart properly in why ur sun sign is different in Vedic astrology.
the nine grahas, and why there is no Pluto
Vedic astrology reads nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are not objects. They are the two spots where the moon's path crosses the sun's, which is where eclipses happen. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not used.
graha gets translated as planet, and something gets lost. it means closer to the one that grabs hold. that is why the Sun and Moon are grahas even though neither is a planet, and why Rahu and Ketu are grahas even though neither is somewhere u could land.
the seven visible grahas are exactly the seven things in the sky u can watch moving with ur own eyes. that is not a coincidence. those same seven name the seven days of the week, in almost every calendar on earth. indian ones too. Ravivara is the Sun's day, Somavara is the Moon's, Mangalavara is Mars, and on down the list.
Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes. the moon's path is tilted about five degrees against ours, so it crosses our line twice each lap. those two crossings are the only places an eclipse can happen.
which is why the old texts call Rahu the shadow that swallows the sun. exact astronomy, wearing a story. the two of them drift backwards through the zodiac at a steady rate, one lap every 18.6 years.
the outer planets are missing because u cannot see them. Uranus was found in 1781, Neptune in 1846, Pluto in 1930, all long after the tradition had set its shape. most vedic astrologers still leave them out. a few include them. nobody is in charge, so it stays open.
twelve houses: the departments of a life
The twelve houses, or bhavas, split ur chart into twelve areas of life: ur body, ur money, ur marriage, ur work, ur letting go. They are counted from ur rising sign, which is exactly why birth time matters. That sign changes about every two hours.
signs tell u how a planet behaves. houses tell u where in ur life it does it.
Saturn in Capricorn describes the flavour. Saturn in the 7th house tells u which department it reports to.
| House | Sanskrit | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Tanu | body, temperament, the first impression u make |
| 2nd | Dhana | earned money, family of origin, speech |
| 3rd | Sahaja | courage, siblings, short trips, ur own effort |
| 4th | Bandhu | home, mother, land, emotional floor |
| 5th | Putra | creativity, romance, children, learning for pleasure |
| 6th | Ari | work, routine, health, debt, problems u solve |
| 7th | Yuvati | marriage, business partners, open opposition |
| 8th | Randhra | upheaval, inheritance, secrets, other people's money |
| 9th | Dharma | luck, belief, teachers, long journeys, the father |
| 10th | Karma | career, public standing, what u are known for |
| 11th | Labha | income, networks, older siblings, what u want next |
| 12th | Vyaya | costs, sleep, foreign lands, release |
most vedic astrologers use whole sign houses. whatever sign is rising becomes all of the 1st house. the next sign is all of the 2nd. and so on round the circle.
no split houses, no arguing about edges. it is the oldest house system still in daily use, and it keeps a chart readable. the full walkthrough is in the twelve houses explained.
twenty-seven nakshatras: the finer grid
Next to the twelve signs, vedic astrology cuts the same circle into twenty-seven nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, about one per day of the moon's journey. In India the nakshatras are older than the signs, and they run dasha timing, marriage matching and muhurat.
this is the part with no western equivalent, and the part most people never hear about.
the moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the sky, so ancient indian sky-watchers marked out the 27 places it sleeps: the nakshatras. they are named in the Rigveda, which puts them in indian use earlier than the twelve-sign zodiac, which arrived later from greece.
ur birth nakshatra is whichever one the moon was in when u arrived. it pins u down more than twice as tightly as ur moon sign does, and it does real work:
- ur dasha sequence starts from ur birth nakshatra's ruling planet. this is the single biggest predictive tool in the system.
- marriage matching is scored on nakshatras, not sun signs. all eight kootas of the ashtakoota method read from them.
- muhurat, choosing a time to start something, is picked partly on which nakshatra the moon is passing through.
- in many families the first syllable of a baby's name is chosen from the pada, the quarter, of the birth nakshatra.
each nakshatra splits again into four quarters, called padas, of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. those quarters are what line the nakshatras up with the navamsa, the ninth side chart. we ranked all 27 by temperament in 27 nakshatras, ranked by how messy they are.
how it predicts: dashas, not daily horoscopes
Vedic astrology times things with dashas: turns that each planet gets, running in a fixed order and adding up to 120 years. The usual system, Vimshottari, starts from ur birth nakshatra and gives each graha a set number of years. Venus 20, Saturn 19, Rahu 18, and so on.
this is the difference from western astrology that people notice last and should notice first.
a western horoscope mostly watches the sky: where the planets are today, compared to ur chart. vedic astrology leans on dashas instead. those are long chapters running inside u, whether or not anything interesting is happening overhead.
vimshottari, the standard one, splits 120 years across the nine grahas in a fixed order and fixed lengths:
| Order | Graha | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 |
| 2 | Venus | 20 |
| 3 | Sun | 6 |
| 4 | Moon | 10 |
| 5 | Mars | 7 |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 |
| 7 | Jupiter | 16 |
| 8 | Saturn | 19 |
| 9 | Mercury | 17 |
where u join that loop, and how much of ur first turn is already gone by the time u are born, comes down to exactly how far the moon had travelled through ur birth nakshatra. that is the whole reason accurate birth details matter so much here.
each big period splits into smaller ones in the same proportions, and those split again. that is how nine planets can give u timing down to the month.
the full mechanism, with a calculator, is in what a dasha is, and why ur life has chapters.
vedic vs western, side by side
The two traditions share a greek ancestor and then went separate ways. Vedic counts from the stars, and uses nine grahas, whole sign houses, nakshatras and dashas. Western counts from the equinox, and uses ten planets, uneven houses, aspects measured in degrees, and today's sky. Neither is a ruined copy of the other.
| Vedic (jyotish) | Western | |
|---|---|---|
| Zodiac | Sidereal, fixed to stars | Tropical, fixed to seasons |
| Bodies | 9 grahas, includes Rahu and Ketu | 10 planets, includes Uranus to Pluto |
| Houses | Usually whole sign | Usually Placidus or similar quadrant system |
| Headline placement | Moon sign, called ur rashi | Sun sign |
| Finer grid | 27 nakshatras and their padas | Decans, degrees, fixed stars |
| Main timing tool | Vimshottari dasha periods | Transits and progressions |
| Compatibility | Ashtakoota, scored out of 36 | Synastry, chart against chart |
| Remedies | Mantra, fasting, charity, gemstones | Rarely part of the practice |
the shared ancestry is written down. the Yavanajataka, a sanskrit text from roughly the second or third century CE, openly presents itself as a version of greek astrology. and the word hora in Brihat Jataka is a greek loanword.
India took what arrived, kept its own nakshatras and its dasha system, and stayed with the star zodiac. the two traditions are cousins who moved to different cities.
is it science? the honest answer
The astronomy inside vedic astrology is real and u can check it. The claim that those positions predict personality or events has not passed a controlled test. So read it as a tradition of interpretation, useful to plenty of people for thinking about themselves, and not as a physical science.
we are an astrology app, so u would expect us to dodge this one. we are not going to.
what is solidly true: the planet positions, the ayanamsa, the wobble figure, the eclipse geometry behind Rahu and Ketu, the dasha arithmetic. every bit of that can be worked out and checked, and any observatory would accept it. when we say ur moon was at 5 degrees 59 minutes of Kanya, u can go and verify that against an ephemeris.
what is not established: that any of those positions cause, or reliably point to, anything in a human life.
the best known test is Shawn Carlson's, a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985. astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance. later reviews have mostly agreed.
there is also no physical explanation that holds up. gravity does not work as one: the midwife pulls harder on a newborn than Mars does.
what is still worth saying: a lot of people find a chart useful as a mirror with a structure to it. a set of words for their own patterns. a nudge to think of their life in chapters instead of one long blur. that is a real use.
it is also a different claim from prediction, and u are owed that difference straight rather than smudged.
where this really matters is money. the fear-then-remedy pipeline runs entirely on people not knowing where the evidence stops. if someone tells u a dosha will wreck ur marriage unless u buy a particular stone from them today, u are not being read. u are being sold to.
how to start reading ur own chart
Start with three things: ur rising sign, ur moon sign and ur birth nakshatra. Get an accurate birth time first, because the rising sign moves on about every two hours. Then find out what the ruler of ur rising sign is up to. Only after that go anywhere near yogas, doshas and remedies.
the usual mistake is starting at the exciting end. people learn about kaal sarp dosha before they know what a lagna is, get frightened, and buy something.
do it in this order instead.
- find ur birth time. hospital record first, then birth certificate, then ur mum's memory. the gap between 2:00pm and 2:40pm can move ur whole house structure. how accurate does it need to be has the numbers.
- get ur rising sign, moon sign and nakshatra. these three carry most of the weight. ur sun sign carries the least, which is the exact opposite of what magazines taught u.
- find the ruler of ur rising sign, and where it sits. that planet is the closest thing ur chart has to a main character.
- learn the twelve houses before the twelve signs. houses are where ur life happens. signs are just the flavour.
- find ur current dasha. it tells u which chapter ur in, which beats any daily horoscope.
- only then go looking at yogas and doshas. and read at least two sources on any dosha before u believe the scary version.
what gets repeated, and what is actually true
Vedic astrology says my sign is different, so one of the two systems must be wrong.
Both are right about where the sun was. They disagree about the name for that spot, because they count from different starting lines. It is like measuring a hill from sea level or from the ground at its base.
Vedic astrology is thousands of years older than western astrology.
The nakshatras really are ancient, and they appear in the Rigveda. But the twelve-sign chart-reading most people mean today took its familiar shape in the first thousand years CE, after greek material reached India. Both traditions are old, and they share a grandparent.
It is a science. It says so in the name.
Jyotish gets translated as the science of light, but the word behind that meant an organised body of knowledge, not something tested under controlled conditions. The astronomy in it is science. The meaning laid on top is a tradition.
A dosha in my chart means my life is cursed.
Doshas are labels for patterns, and most of them are common. Manglik placements alone turn up in something like a quarter to a third of all charts, depending how u count. A label that fits a third of humanity is not a curse. It is a category.
Vedic astrology can predict exactly what will happen and when.
The classical texts hedge constantly. Traditional teaching says a chart shows tendencies, shaped by karma and by effort, not a script u have to follow. Anyone offering u certainty is adding that themselves.
You need an astrologer to understand any of it.
You need one for depth. But the structure itself is public, learnable and calculable, which is exactly why this page exists.
mistakes worth not making
- reading ur sun sign horoscope and deciding vedic astrology does not work. in indian practice the headline is ur moon sign. u have been reading the wrong row.
- guessing ur birth time. a guess gives u a confidently wrong chart, which is worse than no chart. if u really cannot find it, say so and stick to moon readings.
- mixing systems inside one chart. ur vedic moon sign and ur western rising sign do not belong in the same sentence. pick one zodiac and stay in it.
- treating one placement as the verdict. no single planet decides anything. the tradition reads combinations, and one strong friendly planet elsewhere changes the picture.
- buying a remedy before u understand the problem. if the diagnosis arrived with a price attached in the same breath, go and get a second reading.
the receipt
the wobble figures, one full circle every 25,772 years and about 50.29 arcseconds a year, are standard astronomy and have nothing to do with astrology. Hipparchus recorded the effect in the second century BCE. the Lahiri ayanamsa was set by India's Calendar Reform Committee under Meghnad Saha in 1955, and it is still the government standard.
the classical sources here are Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for houses and dashas, Brihat Jataka for chart reading, and the Vedanga Jyotisha for the early calendar layer. the Yavanajataka is the documented point where greek astrology arrived. the study is Shawn Carlson, "A double-blind test of astrology", Nature 318, 1985.
every planet position quoted anywhere on this site is worked out with the Lahiri ayanamsa and shown with the placement it came from, so u can check the working instead of taking our word for it.
frequently asked questions
what is Vedic astrology in simple words?
it is the indian tradition of reading a map of the sky, drawn for the exact minute and place u were born. it uses nine grahas, twelve houses and twenty-seven nakshatras, and it counts from the fixed stars rather than the seasons.
what is the difference between Vedic and western astrology?
where they start counting. vedic counts from the fixed stars. western counts from the spring equinox. the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, which usually moves ur sun sign back one place in the vedic system.
why is my zodiac sign different in Vedic astrology?
because of that 24 degree drift, called the ayanamsa. if u were born in roughly the first three weeks of ur western sign, ur vedic sun sign is the one before it. both systems agree where the sun was. they just start counting in different places.
is Vedic astrology accurate?
the astronomy is accurate to the arcminute and anyone can check it. the meanings laid on top have not held up in controlled studies. so treat it as an organised way of thinking about ur life, not a forecast.
which is better, Vedic or western astrology?
neither is a ruined copy of the other. vedic is stronger on timing, through dashas, and on marriage matching. western is stronger on language for feelings. plenty of people read both and keep them apart.
what are the nine planets in Vedic astrology?
the Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra) and Saturn (Shani), plus Rahu and Ketu, the two spots where eclipses happen.
why does Vedic astrology not use Uranus, Neptune and Pluto?
u cannot see them without a telescope, and they were found in 1781, 1846 and 1930, long after the tradition had set its shape. a few modern astrologers use them. most do not.
what is a kundli?
it is ur vedic birth chart: a diagram of where the nine grahas sat across twelve houses at the minute u were born. north indian charts keep the houses in fixed boxes. south indian charts keep the signs fixed instead.
do I need my exact birth time?
for a full chart, yes. ur rising sign changes about every two hours, and it sets ur whole house structure. ur moon sign changes every couple of days, so it forgives more. ur sun sign barely moves in a day.
what is a nakshatra and why does it matter?
it is one of twenty-seven slices of the zodiac, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide, following the moon day by day. ur birth nakshatra decides where ur dasha starts, and it runs marriage matching too.
what is a dasha?
a planet's turn. the vimshottari system splits 120 years between the nine grahas in a fixed order, and where u start depends on ur birth nakshatra. it is the main way vedic astrology times things.
is Vedic astrology part of Hinduism?
jyotish is one of the six vedangas, the supporting subjects of vedic learning, so its history is tied up with hindu practice. today it is used by people of many faiths and none, and nobody has to be religious to read a chart.
can Vedic astrology predict the future?
it describes tendencies and time windows, not fixed events. the classical texts keep framing the chart as karma shaped by effort. anyone selling u certainty is adding that certainty themselves.
how do I find my Vedic moon sign?
u need ur birth date and a reasonably accurate birth time, because the moon changes sign every couple of days. the calculator on the twelve rashis will give it to u in a few seconds.
is Vedic astrology free to learn?
the system is public and has been for centuries, and the classical texts are widely translated. what u pay for is someone's time reading ur particular chart, not a key to the door.
the five things worth remembering
- vedic astrology counts from the fixed stars. that one choice is why ur sign is different, and it is a difference in naming, not an argument about the sky.
- nine grahas, not ten planets. Rahu and Ketu are the eclipse points: real geometry, told as a story.
- ur moon sign and rising sign do the heavy lifting. ur sun sign matters least, which is the opposite of what magazines trained u to expect.
- dashas are the real engine, and they start from ur birth nakshatra. that is why an accurate birth time is worth chasing.
- the astronomy can be checked. the meaning is a tradition. knowing where that line sits is the best protection against being sold a cure for a problem u do not have.
